I want to buy a birthday gift for my best friend and was wondering if anyone could give me agood starting recommendation. I would avoid the best of compilation (I think) since if he likes it he will probably start hoard everything in the catalogue so might as well get him one of the album

ps. How about the box sets? Anyone bought them? Looks tempting AND expensive!

Here's two of my alltime favorites...in any genre of music. Davis and Coltrane, both classic recordings. And both beautiful recordings too. I have them both on Classic Records 24/96 DVD and they sound as good or better than any SACD I have, at least on my system. I'm not a big fan of the RVG CD remasters from a few years ago, but the music is timeless. And if you click on the images below you can read about the more recent versions that have both the standard 24/96 DVD side and a 24/192 DVD-A side. (btw, not an endorsement of Acoustic Sounds and you can buy them cheaper at other places, but they do have excellent service) Essential....and an excellent way to get into jazz listening.

Both Davis and Coltrane, like most great artists, showed much development during their careers, so the early music is very different from the late. A nice idea would be to get something early and late from each.

Or something in the middle! For Coltrane that might be the ever popular "my favorite things" and for Davis, "Kind of Blue".

Miles Davis' Live at the Plugged Nickel is a really good Boxed Set.

I would probably start with the more accessible (listener-friendly if you will) recordings from each artist.
Miles Davis: Kind of Blue, Milestones.
John Coltrane: Blue Train, Giant Steps.

A Love Supreme, while an absolutely amazing album, might be too much for a first listener.

Ah, Miles and Coltrane...now you've hit upon one of my favorite subjects in music!

As far as box sets go, the Coltrane Box Set THE LAST GIANT is an excellent 2-disc retrospective from trhe beginning to the end of his career. Useful for a beginning Coltrane listener -- you can pick the period during which you like his music the most ("hmm, I like the 60s Soultrane sound...") and then go buy those albums.

Also a great Coltrane box set is The Heavyweight Champion, the collection of all his Atlantic Records recordings. While it is nicer to own the individual recordings, having all that great music in one box set is tops.

Miles records -- I mean, there are the classics like Kind of Blue, etc., but one of my favorite Miles "trilogies" is Steamin' with the Miles Davis Quartet, Relaxin' with the..., and Cookin' with the... Those are three great albums from one of his most prolific and accessible periods.

Good luck with finding some good stuff!

Thanks

I'll demo all of this on Amazon as soon as my headache goes away

See, what going to happen......

I buy the Miles/Coltrane album, listen to it and then I'll probably keep it and give my friend Michael Buble

I heard 2 songs. One is Quando which sounds odd with Nelly Furtardo. The other track is a pop ballad which is not bad....but I digress

ps. would it be smarter and cheaper to get the box set....I saw a Miles David boxset with 4 cds.....will find out the name by this week.

I have limited knowledge of Coltrane but this album has always received heavy rotation on my spin list.

Miles Davis: Miles Smiles, one of his most underrated albums, usually takes a backseat to kind of blue, i actually prefer miles smiles because its a little harder, more hard-bop-ish, which suits me more than kind of blue.

What about Sketches of Spain? I love that one. My first jazz purchase.
