thats your preference. higher bitrate equals higher quality but bigger size. You should do some testing between different bitrates and see what the lowest you can go without noticing a loss in quality. I encode all my cds to my computer to FLAC, convert the flacs to OGG 8 (~256kbps) to transfer to my karma and store the flac on a a spare harddrive. That way I never had to rip the cds again; if i want a different quality or file type, I can just convert the flacs again, which is much easier than ripping cds. I could probably go lower than 8, but i've got the space, so why not?

I go APE. Can I hear the difference between that and APS? Nope but my mind tells me I gotta have something better. I know, I know...there's API but my hard drive tells me I don't need that. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense, huh?

also know that about only 20-30% of the players out there support ogg so if you have an mp3 player or plan to have one in the future you will have to buy around that feature no matter what. but then again ogg is much better than mp3 and everyone should use it (but they wont)

I already have the iriver ihp-120, so I don't have to worry about ogg. What do you guys mean by ape, or aps, sorry if this sounds ignorant, but I don't really know that much about this. After speaking with iriver I downloaded jetaudio 6, and all I want is to get the best quality music. I'm not really worried about size since I'm only putting on about 200 cd's.

they are talking about LAME presets which have nothing to do with ogg...

maybe they didn't bother reading beyond the thread title

me... i currently don't have a DAP yet... i want to get an iriver which i'll probably go with ogg 8 with it maybe crank it up to 10 for my favorite albums (even though 10 is just crazy)

and right now until i get a HD dedicated to music (when i do i'm going FLAC) i'm using -q 6.66 (~213kbps)

So let's say i would rip them at ogg 500 how many cd's can I put on my ihp-120 if they are around 80 min. each? Like I said I'm only putting on around 200 cd's so would I be able to get all that on it?

Doh, my bad. Should have read closer. My bad. Multiple tabs in Mozilla distract. My apologies. I'll butt out.

I understand you want the best, but I never understood 500 kpbs. That's so close to lossless (though the iRiver doesn't support that). I'd say cut it down to half that (~256 or -q 8 at least), but to each their own.

If you want to see sizes, read through this old comparison I did forever ago. You should be able to calculate the numbers based on that.

i just very quickly counted my ogg albums, and ~49 albums at ogg 8 are 4.97gb. I would take that as a very rough estimate as I could have miscounted and each album takes up a different amount of space so your collection will vary

edit: ah, blessing, that was the thread i was really looking for before

Most of my good albums are at 320kbps VBR mp3. Is there much of a difference between 320 and 256? Obviously its a matter of what i can discern, but is 320kbps pretty much Ogg quality?

If you can tell the difference between 256 and 500 Ogg Vorbis, you probably shouldn't be using Ogg Vorbis.
