I recently aquired the album : the downward spiral from NIN, never having heard the band before (unless you count Quake) and I was very pleasantly surprised. I dont reallly like hard rock or metal or punk (only Mogwai), I listen to more positive-outlook music usually, but this is good. Can you recommend similar albums/artists?

NIN does, sure, but NIN is sorta nihilistic industrial metal.. so that makes sense.
anywho, as for other bands.. check out Throbbing Gristle, KMFDM, Ministry, Pigface, or a group called Severed Heads.. though that one may be a bit hard to swallow. actually, all of those may be a bit hard to swallow.. you could try Stabbing Westward for something more immediately accessible.

Also, add to that list Revolting Cocks, Psychic TV, Coil, Chemlab, The Swans, Murder Inc, Die Warzau, Tinfed, Front Line Assembly, and Front 242.
For more accessible I point towards Sister Machine Gun.
Also, I think Further Down The Spiral was much better than the original release The Downward Spiral.

If you like the guitar driven "industrial", then check out 16 Volt if you can. Eric Powell is a poor man's Trent Reznor who pens hard songs with a lighthearted touch.
Letdowncrush and Supercoolnothing are great albums to introduce oneself to.

I am running fear from your suggestions,
I wouldn't classify any of those industrial. Kids these days.

ministry (revco, lead into gold, all the ministry spin offs)
kmfdm
skinny puppy
thrill kill kult
front line assembly
ok yea... the tear garden, not really a skinny puppy spin off, but sort of is.
They are awesome!
front 242...
industrial takes 3 spins, more edgy noisy rock metal (progressive), freakish dance music, then just outright weird and noisy.
Those are a few...
but of course, my favorites stuff, that allowed for this music to happen : david bowie, pink floyd, and a group tangerine dream (which im really not to knowldegable on).
Marilyn manson? Total trash.. sorry to say, but they fell way off, and they were never very good to begin with.

i've been into industrial music since early 90's, but the bulk of the scene was kinda over by then i guess... Yet if you wanna dig up in the crates, i got lots of artists in mind if you guys want me to compile some sort of list.
I gotta confess i'm not so into it anymore, but i paid my dues and have spent alot of interest in this kind of culture and music. Though, i can't stand these types of clubs, and i'm really what you might call a sell-out, since i like other types of music as well.
heh then again, i opened my mind : ]
