can you blow out grados with an ipod?

Hey, I guess I'm a little OCD but I'd like peace of mind here. My roomate wanted to try out my MS-1s so I told him where they were. When I walked by him I heard his music loud and clear, and when I asked to hear what he was listening to, it was unbelievably loud. I seriously think he has hearing loss. Anyways, how loud and how long to you have to play music on grados to damage them?

I wouldn't be too concerned really your friend's ears would get damaged well before the Grado's would. The only thing to watch out for using a weaker powered source like the ipod is clipping. Clipping can damage headphones/speakers even if the volume is not that loud.

my sr-60s clip pretty badly (at least that's what it sounds like) when I approach max vol on the ipod. I wouldn't worry about it though. if they were broken, I suspect it would be obvious.

How do you even aproche max volume on an iPod.
I listen at about 1/2 to 2/3 on my MS-2i
and there louder than my SR60s...

I've had my SR60's up to around a 25 on my Karma...no problems. My ears can't stand any more volume. If someone wants to go higher, you be the test individual.

The Grados will last longer than your ears will, no matter how deaf your roommate might be.

I don't listen that loud, I was only commening that it is quite possible to heavily clip 'phones with an ipod.

it all depends on the sensitivity, i usually listen with my shures and since they have a high (>100 dba) sensitivity i usually set it between 1/3 and 1/2 volume on the ipod. however when i listen to my large headphones (pioneer monitor 10) they're barely audible until about 3/4, some of my friends sony's need the volume all the way up to be heard

I have some really inefficient Sonys that need to be pumped.

But they question here is MS-1s, which I figure are about as loud as SR60s.
I listen at about 1/2 volume...
Full volume is insane.....

I also find everyone at my school listens to their stock buds at like 3/4 volume
omgwtfbbq everyone is gonna be deaf

I usually listen at 1/6 volume on my iPod through E3s. Don't ask me why, but it's plenty loud for me.

with my e2c's I usually have for like 10% or less!

I can hear the music with the volume all the way down on my e2c's also.

For good songs i can easily take full volume on my ipod with the MS-1s. Half volume is not nearly enough i find though, 5/8-6/8 seems to be just about right for me though.

Rob.
