First Tube Amp suggestions?

Thread Starter
Hey. I'm only a beginner to DIY audio and whatever, but ive built my first cMoy just about flawlessly, am almost a master with the soldering iron (i think so at least... good enough so far), and i am interested in more projects...

i see a lot of you talking about how you love tubes, and how cool tube amps are, so i figured i might try out a new area of DIY...

so, can any of you recommend a good Tube Amp project to start off with? im looking for a pretty basic project, nothing way too fancy or whatever, but i definately want to play around with tubes. - i recall seeing a pretty simple tube amp built into the top of an altoids box, i think it was even on protoboard (built by sijoasie(sp?) maybe?)

thanks for any links/suggestions/comments/questions?/help. - adam

EDIT: maybe even hyrbid? i think maybe that amp i saw was hybrid... are these easier or harder to build and use?

Its a pretty straight forward job. I got mine working and its a very "tubey" sound. Give it a try and have fun. Here is the link to the thread at headwize.com. http://headwize.com/ubb/showpage.php?fnum=3&tid=5395

Another good suggestion is the Pete Millett Hybrid tube amp. It will cost a bit more (~$150), but it is also a little easier. Also, it is very low voltage so it is a safe amp for a beginner.

Edit: Pete put the original magazine article up on his site, so building this and understanding it just got a lot easier.
