Green Day is playing in the foreground, American Idiot, track 2. PS-1's driven by the Melos using CBS/Hytron 5814's. Connected to the Melos is a Shanling heavily moddified, T-100, Bendix 6385's, the rarest type of tube on earth is plopped in the buffer stage. Connecting the amp and the cd player are a pair of audio metallurgy ga-zeros. Quite the system, nothing to scoff at.
This system pleases me. I listen to this system as much as possible, though admittedly I swap between the RS-1's and HP-1's and PS-1's (PS-1's being a newly acquired piece of hardware).
Do I love it? Oh yeah, undeniably. Few things in life make me forget the crap world we live in. Fewer things remind me of how great this world really is.
Know what? I bet that if I were to evaluate the joy I get from this system vs. the SR60's powered by a Pioneer 25 disc changing mini-system, I would say they are equal. WHAT?!??!?!?! No way!!?!! Man, that Zanth kid is bloody deaf!
Well, perhaps, but back in the day, back in the late 90's I took the plunge, I dove head first into "audiophilia" by researching at Headroom and Goodcans and I ordered the SR60's (about $144 Canadian at the time). I have never experienced revelation as the first day I used the SR6's. Burn-in? Who needs it when the SR60's were so vastly superior to every single crap headphone I had ever used. Sadly, I never knew I was using crap headphones before. I did that day though, that July summer day in '97.
My family was driving up to TO, we passed through Kingston just to pick up my cans. I plugged them into a first gen Shockwave PCDP, I was in awe. I had tears in my eyes. I felt like a sissy. I didn't care (3 younger brothers in the van as well as my best friend).
The following months saw me walking around campus with these cans. Oh the stares I received! No one was into wearing BIG cans at the time. Not like today. Again, I didn't care. The music was all that mattered and the SR60's were delivering it like I had never heard it before.
Tough day at school?? No problem, some Chicane and my uber comfy recliner and some SR60's strapped to my head took away any and all woes. Girl troubles? Stressed about that next mid-term? Whatever, who cares, nothing that listenin' to my Grados wouldn't take care of.
Appreciation Thread for the SR60's? Bloody Hell, more like a dedicated shrine in my house. No phone I own gets more reverence.
Sure, my wife uses them now exclusively, but they stick within the fam, they are going no where. My first step into audiophilia, my first step into the true solace of music.
