cable for Airport Express to DAC (Toslink)

Thread Starter
Can someone recommend a decent toslink cable from the mini-optical on my AX to the normal sized toslink on the back of a DAC?
Would prefer a solution w/ out adapter but will listen to reason if there is some advantage (better quality cable, etc.)
Thx,
CPW

No luck so far on this end

I have been searching for this type of cable for a while without success. The two main audiophile brands that made a good glass fiber mini-to-optical cable are Wireworld (Supernova) and Van Den Hul (Octocoupler). I called Wireworld and they said they would provide an adapter, but that they no longer made a mini-to-optical cable. I didn't bother calling Van Den Hul.

If you search the forums on Audiogon (or Audio Asylum), you'll find others looking for the same elusive cable. Damn Apple for doing this to us!! I am going to get the adapter and the Supernova. If you have success with finding something, let me know.

I would get this cable plus adaptor.

I wouldn't bother spending more money on a digital cable with an Airport Express as it's probably not the higest quality transport.

Possible News

I have been working w/ a guy @ The Cable Company who also owns an Airport Express. After a couple of discussions, he called up the president of Wireworld and they discussed Wireworld building a glass fiber mini-to-toslink cable for the AE.

Supposedly, Wireworld put in an order for 100 cables, though I haven't heard much since. I call The Cable Company regularly to check in.

It may take a little while, and the price is not cheap (~$150, I'm told), but it's going to be on a par with their Supernova 5 cable, which is one of the best glass fiber optical cables out there.

It frustrates me that it is taking so long to address this underserved part of the market. Who the hell wants to use the cheapo plastic Monster optical cables into a good DAC? Why compromise the signal?

Hopefully this cable will be out soon...I'm assuming people would be willing to pony up ~$150 for a good cable?

For a 3' optical for home use? No? A plastic one costs one (1!) Euro here, one with nice connectors €7. Glass ones start around €12, nice ones at €21. I am generous about analog ICs, but with optical my understanding, even for a nice "hand-made" one, just evaporates looking at anything over €50.
