Newbie having trouble deciding what to get

Hey everyone, there's such a whirlwind of info on here, I'm not too sure what to get. I'm a Canadian university student without too much money, so ebay is probably where I'm going. I need something closed for main use, mostly portable.

Comparing the HD202, CD380, and CD580, where should I be going? Is there anything else in a similar price range I should be looking at? This thread http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/showt...ht=cd380+cd580
is what made me consider the CD380 or CD580?

And for the gym, it seems like my best bet is to grab KSC-55's from HeadRoom.. anyone know if their shipping is still $7 for FedEx 2nd day to Canada? It seems odd that it isn't higher.

Thanks so much, my tuition-destroyed bank account thanks you.

Just bumping this up, really in need of getting some new closed headphones.

I've heard good things about the V6- but is it as harshly accurate as some say?

The HD202s are one of the worst pairs I've ever owned (unless you only want bass) and the current CD series are open cans aren't they? So I'd say none of the above.

The V6s decent for the price, but yeah, the highs get to some like me. What is your absolute price limit?

I'm going to say $100 shipped to Canada, but that would have to be for a truly great price/performance headphone. Little leakage would be greatly preferable if possible, but dampening doesn't matter either way.

Thanks again.

Edit: Just ran over to Audiocubes- perhaps I should be looking at D22SL Eggos? Short cord w/ extension, relatively small (I think), closed, and good reviews, at a pre-shipping 49USD price point..

Yes and No... Without EQ they are very harsh around 3000Hz. If you have an EQ and can attenuate that frequency by ~5-6db they are not so bad... IMHO.

Would you consider canal phones? If so, the Shure E2C's are worth looking at, as they are well under your budget. Other than that, maybe look at the Audio-Technica FC-7's. I know they were the rave a month ago, people really seemed to like them. They are available at www.audiocubes.com

edit: The Sony D66 Eggo get's a lot of praise as well...and they fit your criteria.

Ugh, if it's like D23SL that I have ... I don't think those are 'real' phones. I'd spend another $50 to get Senn HD280Pro from headroom.

Edit: either that or ATH500 / other AT closed phones (40fs / pro5) would be better than D23 eggo.

I'll have to look into those, too, thanks. What specifically do you mean by not 'real' phones?

Very interesting- not quite as nice looking as the Eggo but still good, and just as foldable. Regarding the D66 Eggo- are they *that* much better than the D22, and in what ways? If any category fits me, I'm not quite a basshead, but bass is still important to me.

It'll be the rare instance I ever use a source without an EQ, and at the very least I will never purchase one, so that should be fine. How do they compare to D22/D66 Eggos and the FC-7?

Very thin plastic housing that gets 'echoey', more like a toy ? Anyway sound quality is really not up to par with good phones - and $50 is a lot of money if you consider $30 can get you SportaPro, while HD280 is supposed to be one of top sealed model on Sennheiser line. Please check the headroom link above.

Audio Technica FC-7, then? Thaddy was right- doing a search indicates that people absolutely love them- and while they're not quite as 'cool' looking as Eggos, they're still not bad

Edit- what does everyone think about D22/D66 bass? While some describe it as tight, others say it's lacking, and the reviewers on audiocubes seem to love the bass of both phones as a general statement.. more confused than ever

And of course, with something as subjectively evaluated (for the most part, save frequency charts and such) after doing more research I'm more confused than ever.

Maybe I'll restate what I'm looking for, and the choices that HeadFi seems to be pointing me towards.

Thanks again everyone.

In order:
1> Sound quality- bass, mids, highs, in that order of importance, but SQ in general
1a> Easily driven- will be working most of the time from a DAP
2> Leakage/Dampening
3> Comfort
4> Portability/Durability

It seems to have come down to:

Shure E2c (I've never stuck anything in my ear before, except regular foam earplugs.. they felt weird)
ATH-FC7 (as uncomfortable as some say? but apparently SQ is excellent)
Sony Eggo D22 (w/ cotton/foam mod.. hopefully some can enlighten me on how hard it is, I've never taken apart a headphone before)

Is there a clear choice of these? Or perhaps (sigh) there is another model I should be purchasing instead- perhaps a Sennheiser headphone in this price range?

Thanks everyone...again.

I've been using the FC7's for about a week now, and I'd say that it fullfills most of your criteria pretty well, except for comfort. I couldn't really keep them on for more than an hour. But then again, I have a pretty big head and that might be to blame. Also, as for the sound quality, I think it would vary widely depending on what type of music you're listening to. I think the FC7's go best with pop, hip-hop, rock and that sort of more or less "mainstream" music. But I think it has everything else that you're looking for.

Hope this helps.
