Just got plainviews, charge them?

Hello! Just got plainviews today from Norm, tried PMing him, so thought I'd post it here. Do I have to charge them for 15 hours before I start using them? I heard that I need to do that, because the batteries are pretty much dead when you first get them, otherwise, please someone reply ASAP because they are in the charger as we speak!!!

yeah, they're depleted when you get them. But if the charger you have is Norm's simple charger, the Powerizer, it should be less than 15 hours. Norm says 12, the instructions in the box say 12-14. From what I understand, it's important to remove them then, because that charger has no way of discerning how fully charged a battery is. It'll keep sending a full charge to it, which over time will just kill your battery.

I charged mine 14 hours for the initial chrage. But after that I normally charge it for 8 hours. NEVER charge it more than 16 hours. Overcharging is one of the most common causes of rechargable battery failures.

What is the charging current of that powerizer charger?

The powerizer outputs at 16 mA - so, if the plainviews are 170 mAH, 9.6v, how long should I charge them with the powerizer?

170mah / 16mA x 1.2 = 12 hrs, 45min minumum
170 / 16 x 1,4 = (almost) 15 hrs max.

Most people use "x 1,4" for calculating the time but you also see "x 1,2" used a lot. Since the plainviews are probably a bit less than 170 mah (the rating is hardly ever accurate.) I'd say anything between 13 and 15 hours will do. I myself would chose to charge them for 14-15 hours.

For the first couple of times make sure you charge for the full 15 hrs. Gives you better battery life in the long run!

If you're using that same powerizer charger then you're not charging them any fuller than 107 mah. That's not good for them either. They'll get lazy.

Thanks Lisa, great breakdown, I knew there was some formula for figuring that stuff out, thanks!

thanks, Lisa -- that was a great explanation!

The bad part is that I've already charged mine twice for just a little over 12 hours. I hope it will readjust its 'memory' (or at least won't won't be bad) if I leave them in for 15 the next couple times.

recstar24, guys -- Where can I get plainviews?! Who's Norm?

I heard the company who makes them (headsave was it?) is no more?

I'm looking for battery options for my SR-71 and porta corda.

Thanks!

Im using the plainview charger. IIRC it charges at 25ma, so using your formula, it should be about 8-9 hours charging for my charge.

I have tested my plainviews with my previous XP-7 and the 8 hour charge lasted as long as the 15 hour charge with the same volume level.

edit: Thanks for giving the formula, I have always wondered how people come up with charging times because I always come up short when I try multiplying the battery capacity and the charger output. I didnt know a 1.2 -1.4 multiplier should be used.

I overcharge mine all the time, the thing has no timer and there seems to be no way for me to keep track of when they need to be taken out. So far there doesn't appear to be any damage.

Norm made the Headsave amps. To go with them, he stocked Plainview batteries, Powerizer and Maha chargers (the latter being a two-hour 'smart' charger) and Elpac PSUs. He's no longer taking orders for amps, but word is he's going to sell off his extra parts and supplies on head-fi; keep an eye open on the Mall-Fi forum.

you can also get them here. They should be $10 wherever you find them.
