I have heard about this many times before and mostly do beleive it but this is the most lucid explaination so far I have found on the need for digital spdif cables over 1.5 meters-

Interesting read Rick, it makes a lot of sense. Hard to believe that the 6 billionths of a second transmission time between a 1 meter cable and a 1 1/2 meter cable could make all that difference. What really worries me is that there could be a lot of transports out there that might not hold up to that exact time frame which could cause even more trouble in selecting a digital cable.

And just as I have a 1 meter coaxial enroute to me!
Thanks Rick!

I'll keep this in mind when upgrade fever strikes.

I tend to agree with Steve Nugent. I always try to recommend 4.5' as a min, but most people are more concerned with aesthetic aspects. Having everything short and clean etc.

I once sent my wife out to pick up a digital coax cable for me and i specifically asked her for a 1 meter cable length. It was my opinion that like with audio interconnects or speaker cables shorter just gotta be better right ?

She comes hone with a 6 footer

I thought about chaining her to the wall in the basement and feeding her bread and water for a couple of months

me-"what's this ?"
her-"the cable you asked me to pick up"
me-"oh no no no no it is not young lady.I asked for THREE FEET not six ! what am i supposed to do with this hmmmm ? Make two cables out of one ?"
her-"go fk yourself"

not exactly how it went but almost

it turns out that having done some research she did the right thing by me,not that i will ever tell her that !

I am thinking this is maybe why the reviews for transports, digital cables and DA Converters are all over the map sometimes and the published results so variable.Find the right cable that just happens to match up with your system and bliss !
Otherwise you end up not satisfied but don't know which device to blame so all are suspect and it is back to the "one box" soltiion, the CDP.
Just what we need, another "variable' in our systems.Isn't this fun ?

If you worried about reflection, one often used trick other than adding termination resistor is to add a 10 ohm series resistor to the signal path. This will damp the reflection and reduce the reflection (not eliminate but reduce).

Simple, just go much longer than 1.5m. Say 2-3m, etc.
