Sony MDR-EX71

Thread Starter
so i've had these earbuds for a few months now, and suddenly, the right earbud decided to conk out on me. I tried pulling on the cord to readjust the connection, and sometimes it comes through, sometimes it doesnt. I figure its past warranty from etronics and from sony, so i'm not quite sure what to do. Anyone else have this problem with this set of headphones, or at least heard of it? i love these damn things...so much better than the crap ones apple sent with the ipod. perfect for blocking out noise when i'm walking from class to class.

help!!

I had those before and used them for maybe six months a couple of years ago. I didn't have any of the problems you had. The cord's really soft so maybe it's natural wear-and-tear or you tugged on it harshly without knowing it...

I've had mine for about a year, and the rubber piece that attaches the right bud to the cord just ripped off. luckily the wire is still attached, but the rubber is almost completely off the bud. you can try calling the place where you got them from and see if they'll exchange it, but youre probably right about it being too late. doesn't hurt to try though

The same thing happens to me last december. The right head phone just stopped working. There was a short some where in the wire. Well I used to opportunity to upgrade and I bought the shure e2cs. AFter a month of burn in I can say that they are head and shoulders above the sonys.

I used to really love them. Especially at the price. So I owned the EX51 (twice), EX70 and EX71 as well as other sony earbuds at the price range.

I can tell you that every single damn one of them died. Not because of wear and tear, or accidental damage. One of the drivers would just burn out for no reason. I didnt listen loud either.

At first it seems like contact issues, but I've gone ahead and cut open my dead EX71's with a dremel and the connection is *perfect*, the driver just blows - damn sony.

Anyway, I'm up to the E5 now (E3 before them), maybe its time for you to jump into the semi audiophile category? -- how about the Shure E2 that are extremely durable, come with a 2 year free replacement warranty, and lifetime cheap replacement warranty not to mention great sound

Anyway, well known issue, they burn for everyone sooner or later. Longest pair to last for me was just over 12 months, but I was extremely careful with them, put them away in the protective and soft cases, low volumes, less than 2 hours per day listening, etc...

This is strange. My left ear died just a few days ago on my EX70s. I'm not going to buy any Sonys again.

Tip - they make great earplugs to sleep in!

It's happened to me, too, after six months of ownership (Right plug, same problem).

All I can recommend is not to buy Sony products.

They have terrible build quality and warranties with their low-end stuff.

I've just fixed mine, the tiny hole was blocked with ear wax (nice!!). It's now full volume after being so quiet, it's such a ridiculous design

LOL! -- mine got blocked on a daily basis. In the end I let go of all hygiene conerns and would just suck the wax out of the hole with my mouth, then spit it out, lol.

You can make the hole bigger, but it doesnt help much.

PS: If you get the sonys, you might as well get used to this technique, unless you want to be stranded in the middle god knows where with no music. Its also far more effective than water and a needle damages the non-replaceable filter.

I dread to think how you clean your toilet

Oh, what I do is collect the earwax I suck out of the EX71, then..... (I'll let your imagination run away with you on that one)

Toilet brushes are so overrated

For the record though, I cleaned my EX71 with alcohol on a weekly basis.

So basically just get the tool that you are using and poke a little hole very carefully into where you would normally see the hole, if indeed your earbuds are full of wax. This will allow sound to pass through it again.
Oh, great suggestion! - damage your filter *and* push wax into the driver. It will work great after, we promise!
