Any Magnepan experts?

I can't decide between the MG12 and MG 1.6 Q/R. To be driven with McIntosh MA 6500 (120 watts into 8 ohms, 200 into 4), which should be okay for either. I'd prefer not to get a subwoofer.

My wallet will accomodate the 1.6, but its just so damned huge. My room is pretty big, 20 x 35 maybe, but I only use one side of it (so its kind of like a 20 x 17 with a side wall missing) and the ceiling is low, maybe 77."

maggies

Don't know about the ones you mentioned, but I've had the MG 2.7 for several years and the maggie sound is soooo nice!

Can't listen to them now since I have no space...guess that's why I turned up here.

Don't think you can go wrong with either one, and I've read some good reviews of the 1.6
I think the absolute sound? or another magazine recently made them a best buy for speakers.

good luck and enjoy!

I love my 1.6's and have not heard the 12. Your room size can easily accomodate the 1.6 -- I have a smaller room, 15 by 21, and have them in off white. They are definately visable but not unattractive. Probably not much different of an effect than with the 12's, but so much of htat is subjecive. Good luck.

Thanks. I've heard the 1.6 and know they're great - at least in certain rooms - but haven't compared with the 12, which is supposed to be pretty close, less power hungry, and is less imposing. Tuberoller raved about the humble MMG, and many have commented that the 12 is a major step up, so its got to be a nice choice too. There's a dealer nearby where I can compare them -- again in someone else's room -- but since I'm probably going to buy used -- there are presently several for sale in my area -- I'm not going to take advantage of him.

I flash back to the time I had Quads, tube monoblocks, separate pre and phono pre, and three-box CD playback set up in a small apartment (I have a house now). It sounded better than a number of $$$ systems I heard, such as at a Stereophile show, but I just couldn't live with all the boxes, spaghetti, heat (!) and maintenance. Don't want to go down that road again.
