look at newegg.com. i think you'll be hard pressed to find 5400 drives new. maybe you could find some used or late model ones on ebay.

seagate is what you want for a quiet drive, samsung too if you're getting a new drive

Not a bad idea, although a benchmark dac1 is probably more expensive than the nad and emu combined for one thing, and also I do plan to use my E-mu for recording, not just playback. But I would love to get a Benchmark Dac1 and plug it in the system I have now. Maybe an option for the future.

Since all the music is going to be stored on one pc and accessed with another, usually, I don't think noise is going to be a problem. My computer is already noisy as heck with its fans...

I'm having trouble accessing one computers files from another computer. Is there a way, using a network, to just access the hard drive of the other pc easily and access all the files?

Well, WD is famous for being a little louder than the rest of the pack but Seagate costs more and is slower than the Maxtor w/ 16mb cache. Its all about choices, I would rather put performance first and if necessary find a solution for the noise issue. Its not like we are talking about Raptors. . But I suppose there is an argument to be made that the Seagates are bullet proof compared to the WDs.

But given that he is doing a network, at this point the closet or the next room sounds like a good solution.
