Cheap kitchen/dining room set-up

So this semester I decided that I should to try to cook, and it'd be a lot easier/enjoyable if I had some music going (plus we still don't have a TV in the apartment so it can be kind of a bore). Anyway I'm thinking of what I could possibly do. I don't want to spend much money on this (ie, definitely under $50).

I'm thinking...

cheap PC speakers hooked up to mp3 discman (which I would already have). People have recommended respectable cheap speakers.

I could also try some standalone boombox type thing.

What would you do?

If you can, and have the space, think about getting the Altec Lansing ATP3. Great set for the price.
