soundcard - dac - amp - headphones: is this a worthwhile setup?

Since I'm going to be replacing my desktop with a powerbook next year, I've decided not to base my setup around a PCI card. With this, for example, I can just swap the chaintech with a cheap usb/firewire device. Anyway, is this a good setup? It's slightly expensive for me...means no iPod for a while, some convincing to do (parents), etc....is it worth it?

AV-710 > VDA1 > VHP1 > HD580/HD600/used MS-2s or 650s

yes,worth it.at least for me it is.

Just getting the audio signals out of the computer is a major step forward in sonic quality.

Keep in the computer what it does well : digital,and get out what it does not : Analog audio

oh yeah its worth it. having 2 CI blocks stacked next to each other is damn sexay!

The only fear I have is that I'll order all this stuff just to find that the sound is good but not overwhelmingly awesome, in which case I'll decide to return everything and feel like a total idiot. To a non-audiophile who recognizes the difference between bose speakers and NHT, for example, will this impress? Thanks so much, btw, this forum has been SOOO helpful!

Also (assuming I take the plunge), is there anything here you'd swap or any phones you'd favor with this type of setup? Also, what interconnects should I get (not looking for anything fancy if I can avoid it)? It helps if it's carried at best buy...won't eat into my budget since I have $100 in gift cards I've been meaning to use, but not a must.

IIRC, akio has the same setup except he uses CD3000. PM him about it and see what he says. not many people here own CI amps, so its kinda hard for us to give you opinions.

Which are better suited to this higher-end setup...SR225s or HD600s...I can get them for practically the same price. Or are MS-2s and 650s clearly better in this case?
