Whoa that's a nice piece of kit. It is it a upsampling dac? Or do you prefer the non-upsampling dac's? I bet it cost a bomb

Not yet. Under the metal shielding is the digital section and I also received a 24/96 daughter board which should then upsample to 24/768 before converting. A few contact pins and nylon spacers are missing. I have to order them before I can install the board.

Thus, anything that isn’t a 24/96 KHz signal is converted into one by the process of upsampling. Once upsampled, the now 24/96 signal is then oversampled eight times to an astounding 768 KHz before being decoded (at the absolutely blinding speed of 25 MHz!). Thus, for all practical purposes, the Dodson DA-217 MK 2-D is a 24/768 DAC!

I have not enough experience to answer that. From reading I’m under the impression that the proper implementation is a bigger influence.

They go quite cheap on Audiogon. =o)

Now I think about selling the DAC1.

I can confirm that it sounds excellent even without upsampling. In the same league as the Bel Canto DAC2 -- although I haven't made a direct comparison --, which means something.

Kurt+Jazz>I don't know what your experiences are. But I find upsampling dac sound digital and artificial compared to my ML dac. Hey Kurt there is a wadia 27ix dac for sale by a person in Germany. Will you help me check it out????

Kurt, better than the DAC1? Can't be.

The Dodson looks very nice, can't wait to hear it with your future Dynamight!

Sent you a e-mail.

LOL. Actually I found the Dodson, while with a different character, surprisingly close to the McCormack, at least with the ZU Mobius.

Cheers

My experience with upsampling is limited to the Philips DVD 963 SA and the Bel Canto DAC2, and I haven't heard a Mark Levinson DAC/CDP so far. On this background I'm quite positive towards upsampling: the Philips sounds best with 96 kHz upsampling, and the Bel Canto's sound speaks for itself (and 192 kHz/24 bit). Nevertheless, I don't think upsampling is better in any case, although my new reference source, the McCormack UDP-1, seems to upsample as well -- according to McCormack Audio probably with 96 kHz/24 bit, but they're not sure themselves... (only Pioneer, the supplier of the drive assembly, seems to know). After all I don't perceive upsampling as digital sounding at all, rather the opposite.

Have you ever thought of trying a non upsampling dac which is digital-filterless? You might be surprised at the results.

Non-upsampling and Non-oversampling are not the same thing (specifically, not all DACs that don't upsample are non-OS a la Kusunoki), and Non-oversampling are usually the ones without digital filters...

please correct me if I'm wrong, people.

I'd like to hear a completely filterless DAC such as the Ack dAck one day. On the other hand, a DAC just renouncing the digital filter (= up-/oversampling) doesn't really promise a revolutionary progress, since it represents the oldest implementation of CD players (such as the first Sony or Hitachi CDPs). The theoretical advantages of synchronous oversampling have proven to be audible at that time, whereas the theoretical disadvantages of asynchronous upconversion («upsampling») often turn out to be favorable, at least to some ears. But nowadays there seems to be better know-how about how to build a good sounding NOS CDP. Nevertheless, I seem to already have got the perfect CD (and hi-rez) player, so the curiosity is decent.

Up- and oversampling can be seen as the same thing, although the term «upsampling» is commonly used for asynchronous oversampling. BTW, the up-/oversampling algorithm itself is the «digital filter».
