Pros: Decent sound isolation, sounds is detailed, neutral enough for the price

Cons: The cord is bulky and annoying at times.

I was originally looking at the HD 515's but then after much deliberation and review study I settled for the HD 380's. When I first got the phones I was not too thrilled as they sounded very brash specially in the mid rage with over emphasised vocals. Over the next few weeks of use the brash sound slowly faded away as the cans started to break in. Now the sound is much warmer and the mids have evened out so they are no longer accentuated. For $160, this is not a bad choice unless you are looking for a bass heavy cans. Remember these are designed to give a flat response so if you are looking at some skull kicking bass look elsewhere. If you are looking at detailed sound with tight but not overwhelming bass then this does the job. Obviously this is not the flattest response you can get from a set of cans but for the money, can't complain either.

When I auditioned the 380s they gave a very unnatural piano and string sound. I'm not sure that burn in would solve this for me so I went with the Shure 840s instead.
I don't doubt the Shure 840's are a good pair. Keeping in mind that certain expectations are subjective depending on personal perception. If the 380's you auditioned was new then yeah you can expect some frequencies to be off; if it was broken in and I mean 20+ hours atleast then it probably would not improve as per your requirements. Either way glad you found found something that suits your requirement.
