My freshly finished SSMH on it's first test drive. The pot, knob and output jack were salvaged from a vintage stereo. There's bad scratching sound from the pot, I'll have to find a better one.
Since the case isn't made out of metal, it doesn't act as a Faraday cage. Don't your heat any hissing or noise from your amp since you amplify any parasite entering the signal chain?
Actually, I do have pink noise in the background. I still haven't figured where it's from. I must admit I never thought about the case being responsible for it... But now that I think about it, many amplifiers are built of wood and plastics. I believe the design has a stronger effect on noise that the material of the case. Also, the heat sinks and the transformers are grounded, and there are ground wires all around the amplifier. These probably act as a crude Farady cage. I am currently using 12AX7 tubes, which have a high gain. I have 12AU7 in the mail, which have a lower gain. We'll see if this reduced the noise.
