i usually avoided sony for some reason... maybe because of their car audio stuff that i had bad experiences with... but the other week i tried out their $99 "DJ" headphones and they had pretty surprising clarity in the midrange. i actually liked them, for a "fun" can.
@qqexpress, @asmagus, @liamstrain, @antberg: I'll post impressions as soon as I can. If I can't get them in before CanJam @ RMAF next week, then it would have to wait until after.
@Craigster75, I think the protective grille will provide ample protection for the driver. As for sweat, I'm not too concerned about that. In examining several other headphones here, some have cloth covers that don't seem much more protective than the ones on the MDR-1R (non as see-through as the MDR-1R, however), and I haven't had problems with those. If I run into any problems, I'll post to let you guys know.
@reddragon: This headphone was left with me by Sony's Naotaka Tsunoda, when he came for a visit a couple of weeks ago. @thecansmancan: It does look like a relative of the MDR-V6--a highly evolved relative. It is far more comfortable, though, and definitely sounds much better than the MDR-V6 to my ears.
@william7487: That headphone stand was made by Astro Gaming, and I like to use it for the photographs not just because it's nice looking, but also because it doesn't stand out too much (and so doesn't take the focus away from the headphones).
Sony showcased a new range of MDR-1 headphones at this year's IFA trade fair, with three products "designed for the sounds of today" and developed in partnership with Sony Music Entertainment and artists such as Katy B and Magnetic Man. Aka it has hyped bass. It looks great, but it is more aimed for the beats audience that's too hipster for actual beats. So I think I'll pass on these....
