Yeah, it would have been nicer had I a larger bit, router bit or the like to use. I actually bought a nice 2.5" tall router bit for use in my...

Nice job, but May I ask would it be better to use "milling bits" instead of drill? If at low speed and you hold it tight, that should work.

MOSFET-MAX Build

These are some photos of my MOSFET-MAX Build.

Here is the board on first power up. Everything seemed to go smoothly.

Glowing tubes on my first power up.

Here is some of the raw wood purchased for the build. I bought both Alder wood and some Mahogany. I decided on the Alder for this project.
Sep 18, 2012
Here is the final "Block" that will be the basis of the case. I cut the Alder down into lengths of around 8.5", planed the mating faces of each of the four pieces, then glued and clamped them together. After they dried, I trimmed each end using a table saw and planed the top and bottom. Finished with hand sanding from 80 grit, 120 grit, 320 grit and 400 grit paper. At this point it is a solid block. I will use a combination of a router table and drill press to hog out the inside to create the final shell shape.

Here is a rough idea of the design. The wood case will be shorter in the final product. The rough block was cut just slightly oversize because the aluminum supply company gave a +/- of 1/4" so I went with +3/8" in case, but the al came in pretty darn close to net size. Next step is to final OML of the wood block, hollow it out and start putting in the guts.

It took quite a bit of time on the belt sander and hand sanding to get the aluminum base plate cleaned up. It arrived in horrible condition, like the company used an axe to cut it. The base is .375 inches thick, solid 6061-T651. The wood block will be hollowed out as the top. Now I need to trim up the wood to match the base.

Here I'm hollowing out the case. That was my largest diameter bit. I bought a router bit 2.5" tall, only to find out it's too large for my router. So, this is what I went with.

Here it is together. The amp is inside. I'm debating on flipping it over and having the tubes stick out more or going this route.

This is as much as they stick out. I ned to clean up the holes a bit with some TLC, but for now, I'm done today.

Work it.

Don't mind the gap between the wood case and the aluminum plate. I'm still awaiting parts to complete the joint. And some feet.
