The comment on the foobar website is correct. You can get bit perfect music with just direct sound.   ASIO and WASAPI just makes sure you are doing it right.

You probably also want something with really low output impedance for proper damping.

It was my first time going to a head-fi meet but I had a great time during the event. Will definitely go again to another meet when it happens.
