I'd still stretch the budget and go for the triple-fi's. Going to the triple-fi's from the superfi-5 pro's, imho, was a big step up in overall sound quality.

After a full 24 hours of burn in, I'm really liking these MX580's; more so than the PK-3's. Sennheiser have done a nice job with these inexpensive earbuds and swbf2cheater is right. They've got a PK-1 level of sound...

To be honest, the volume control doesn't get in the way of things. I'm burning a pair in right now for use with a Sansa clip and have the EQ leaning towards the bass end. I've noticed that they are too sterile coming...
