Yeah, I've tried ABX tests before, and I can't tell the difference between 320 and FLAC. I can tell a 128 from 192 in some real world situations, though. For instance, 128 on my decent home system can sound really flawed, but at work (with cheap work laptop and low-mid headphones), I can't really tell. Also, not all rips/encodings are equal. A bad rip of a bad mix at 128 can make me want to cry, but a good mix/rip/encoding can sound quite good.   And that's why I'm an...
Old thread, I realize, but I'm posting in hopes of reviving the topic.   I have an old HTC Trophy running WP 7.5 that I think sounds pretty good for a smartphone (in part due to an SRS sound enhancer).  I am looking to upgrade soon to either an HTC 8x or a Nokia Lumia 928 running WP 8 (Verizon customer).   My only hesitation about the Lumia is sound quality. I've read "good sound" on various reviews, but nothing that is especially informative. My spouse has a...
I'm listening to my HD 560 Ovation-II right now. I purchased mine in late 1994, for around $250 (if memory serves). It was my first higj-quality headphone and my first experience with an open design. I didn't know much about headphones at the time, but they looked beautiful and sounded better than any headphone I had heard up to that point. Initially, I bought them to pair with a Denon PMA-520 amp and CD player, but I later expanded their duties to computer audio and...
Wussy "Left for Dead" -- Great Midwestern alt-rock album featuring Lisa Walker and former Ass Ponys frontman Chuck Cleaver. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjDXceXFicMa
Stirring acoustic compositions from one of the titans of ... death metal? Great disc. Reminds me a bit (just a bit) of Peter Gabriel's "Last Temptation of Christ" soundtrack.
Bison B.C. - Lovelessness Nothing audiophile about these guys; just primal hard rock.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2GC3oh1h1s
Quite possibly the best album I've heard this year. Beautiful, haunting, poetic.  http://vimeo.com/58995379
Miasma & The Carousel Of Headless Horses - Perils   Interesting instrumental progressive rock with a strong gothic bent. Excellent recording quality and musicianship. Another Web of Mimicry release. This label is rapidly becoming a favorite of mine.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHgm4Hoco8c
Good for Cows "Audumla". Impossibly deep sludge drones/grooves by Oakland experimental jazz duo (published by Web of Mimicry). These are not so much songs but ominous Black Sabbath-inspired wordless tone poems. Mesmerizing.   http://www.myspace.com/goodforcows/music/albums/audumla-14598612
Today it's been a lot of Matt Pike, particularly High on Fire's blistering, mind-numbing "Death Is This Communion" and "Blessed Black Wings." But I'm at the end of my work day, now, so I'm finishing with a mellow masterpiece he played on, Sleep's "Dopesmoker" (a/k/a "Jerusalem"). This album has its charms, especially when one is trying to get into the "zone" of concentration or is about to succumb to, err, sleep. I'm sure there are other times, as well. Oh, to be 21...
