Hi. I'm one of the masses here to give my opinion. I'm also in favor of an all-out non-portable amp, but mainly I want to say that I would love to use board-mounted parts and a custom case, for the following reasons: a) the amp can look more professional b) there would be less effort in building the amp - with the META42 the effort required to drill the Hammond case was at least as much as to populate the board (for me), and it was rather frustrating work. Also...
That scratching sound is probably clipping somewhere in the source or amplification, not your headphones. If it only occurs when you turn the volume up it's your amplifier (I doubt the Sennheisers clip at comfortable volumes).
I bought the "ALPS pots" from hkleung on ebay a few months ago, and were shipped two 50K-ohm stepped attenuators (verified by opening the case). I got a couple more from the same guy a couple months ago, and they were both just pots, with about 20% mismatch between channels.
I didn't do this test either, as my thoughts are in line with Zin_Ramu's and Spad's. All those people who claim 128kbps mp3's are trash, where are they now?
Plextor and Sony. I have used several models from Plextor and one from Sony. They were all good. Audio extraction yields the same result each time even without EAC.
erikzen: I think companies tend not to manufacture their higher end models in China because, as other posters in this thread have pointed out, China's labor costs are cheap so cheap stuff tend to be made there. If you're trying to sell an amp for $2000 when other amps are going for $300, you want some aspects of your amp to be different so you can push your product. Like dokebi said, China's factories are relatively new, and many are state-of-the-art due to substantial...
I found some great computer speakers for $30 that I thought I'd share with you guys. I never liked the 3-piece satellite/woofer systems because the frequencies around 100-200 hz cannot possibly be adaquately covered by either the woofer under your desk, or the little single-driver satellites. Besides, the woofer is too busy booming out crappy bass to output any musical content. Good for those who like lots of treble and lots of bass, but not for those who like music, which...
I wouldn't wear them on my head if I were you because when "the d990s walk over, jump up and down on, and spit in the beyer dt 770 pros face" you wouldn't want to be anywhere near them.
Considering that the Grado RA-1 is a CMoy in a wood box, what does everything think the RA-1 AC will be? I'd guess RA-1 plus $15 wall wart.
I just sold a Denon on ebay. I never liked the sound of it from day one. It sounds metallic, and overall it just doesn't sound right but I can't pinpoint what. The latest fan favorite is the Sony DVP-NS500V which can be had for less than $150 new. I haven't heard it though so I don't know if it's any better.
