This is my first post ever, so forgive my newbie ways... but have you considered J-B weld? The stuff is tough as nails and will hold forever. You can file it down once it hardens (you can "mold" it while soft). Just be careful with it... it is a strong epoxy after all. It's pretty inexpensive, too. It's available at any self-respecting hardware store.   And when cured the finish isn't too bad, a nice flat gray. Which, I'm sure you could paint, if you felt so...
