I also have the SR 007s.  Yes they are not as "special" as the SR 009s, but still great nevertheless.  All my comments relative to gradual break-in improvements via the SR 009 apply to the 007s as well.  At my "man cave," during listening sessions we frequently swap "cans".... I mean earspeakers  (forgive me)
I thank you for your understanding.   aross
Check my profile.  I am retired and NOT in the audio business, or ever was.   Hereafter, I'll keep my thoughts to myself.  I posted my review because I was really overwhelmed by what Stax had accomplished.  Now I will just shut-up.
This is a review of the newly released STAX SR 009 headphones..   While the several hundred hours of “break-in” was ongoing, I selected from my library a collection of vocal, solo instrumental, chamber, orchestral, symphonic and jazz of various colors to be used during my audition adventure.  All of this music was downloaded from several online “high-resolution” sites.   Being experienced with headphone listening since the early 1980s, and...
Sorry, I miss-spoke.  When I received the WES, all internal updates had been performed.  So that was my starting point.   Art
When I took delivery of the WES, it was "stock."  After at least 30 days of continuous playback (24/7) including many hours of playback of the full 5-minute glide tone from the AYRE "Irrational, But Efficacious!" CD, I began serious listening.  Mentally I was comparing the early hours of playback with the "broken-in condition."  Suffice it to say that in every way the sound improved... deeper, clearer, less restricted, etc., etc..  Then I installed WOO AUDIO's "top of the...
My WES has two connections for all STAX electrostatic cans.  So visitors can listen to the '9 then switch to the '7 as the music is playing.  The general character of the sound of the 007 and 009 are very similar.  The 009 has more "you are there."
They are even more comfortable than the SR 007!  There is NO fatigue.  And they feel very much the SR 007 on the ears Art

The new MBP is overkill and will not gain you any advantage over a 2 year-old 15" MBP.  I took a 2 year-old unit, changed the drive to an Intel 108GB SSD, and brought it up to 4 GB ram.  I store all d/l FLAC files on an external drive and all converted AIFF files on another external drive.  Playing the music through the SSD sounds better than from a normal HDD.  The key here, even if you are only headphones user, as I am, is finding the best DAC you can afford, or are...
