Improvements all depends on where we start from and how component sounds before mods with stock capacitors (which ones).

For example, if it has stock Wima poly's and you find it still too "dull," going to paper-in-oils would be the wrong thing to do is b/c Wima's already tend to be very detailed/bright compared to oils. FT-3 Teflons would be the logical choice in this scenario, and vice versa.

It's no problem to parallel FT-3 to get 0.44 (close enough to 0.47), and since you have them, try them b/c they are very good capacitors.

And one's tastes play a big part. Some love paper-in-oil sound while some hate that sound. It's all about learning what *YOU* like and inching the system toward that goal; no one can tell you what you should like, etc.

Basically, it's all about trying different things and making changes if you are not satisfied. It's so much easier to make little tweaks at home without having to go to somebody, so try learning to use the solderer. Good luck.

Hi Jon , many thanks for your reply . Apologies but i should be more specific : I just ordered ampohms ( don't have them yet) and Jupiters will cost the same money as Ampohm from the same dealer . As preamplifier stage maybe the most important -
do you think that details/soundstage of bypassed Jupiters will be better than Ampohms
(i still can change my order ) I just have an impression from your review that you didn't impressed with copper version in comparison to other ampohms. Apologies again
( i need to ask friend of mine to do mods for me and need to travel a bit - that's why
i would like to make " right" choice . Hope this helps . And very last and important and at the moment the cheapest option for my ( back to power amp ) - i have 8xFT-3 0.22 -
can i wire them in parallel to get more less 0.47 value and if it is possible would they sound better then mundorf silver/oil ? I am really grateful and thank you in advance .
    Best regards . Val

My rule of thumb is to use just one capacitor if it sounds good, so I would first just try the AmpOhm copper for a long period before deciding to bypass. If the sound has serious issues in your system for your tastes, then adding bypass can help. All those caps you mention have a good chance of working well, but Kp1832 would probably be a good bet and at cheaper price.

Hi Jon , many thanks for your reply . I also have Ampohm copper and wondering if bypassing them with ero kp1832 will work or bypassing with mundorf sgo or jupiter/ero
will be better choice ( this is for preamplifier ) Thank you in advance . Have a nice weekend . Best regards . Val

Hi Jon , hope you are well . I would be very grateful if you can advice me on baypassing
values of v-cap : i have 0.47 mf K75-10 and wondering if 0.068 is correct value to get more detail or 0.047 is more standard and "safe" choice ? My amplifier is Art Audio PX25 with mundorfs s/o inside and i want to try k-75/teflon combination after reading your posts... Many thanks in advance . Best wishes . Val

    Jon,

Nice thread re caps. I will have to try some of the ones noted that I haven't before.

Re Penta Caps, I was at one time considering selling these as a distributor. I have a nice set of them (over $500 retail for the 4 pieces) as coupling caps in my EL-34 amp (which I am running SE). To my ears they are consistently better than the V-Caps, especially in the areas that matter most to me - microdynamics / dynamic contrasts, and naturalness of female vocals and acoustic instruments.

FYI, the 'standard' Penta teflon and foil use aluminum foil. That said, to my knowledge these were never really put into production (where did you get yours?), so it's possible you have tin foil in yours. My Custom rep told me they were experimenting with oil impregnation, but I never tried any of those. He also said that one could order any available foil, lead or fill material desired. The Tempo Electric capacitor shoot-out noted they were available on custom order, which is pretty much the same as most of Custom's caps.

Some background - Custom builds teflon caps for critical down-hole oil well monitoring, which is an extreme pressure and temperature environment, as well as various aerospace and military applications. They use cast teflon film, which is substantially more expensive than the skived film (shaved off a spinning block by cutters) used by all other audio teflon caps. The cast film has virtually no voids or holes, as are common with the skived film. Use of skived film is the main driver behind dual cap windings, as the overlapped films are much less likely to have aligned voids. My rep said the single winding in the Penta Caps has very low inductance, so 'reducing inductance' is not really a factor in using the dual windings, all else being equal.
