Use multiple programs. There are always going to be virus programmers who try to exploit a certain system (usually Norton) so having multiple programs eliminates having to worry about this.

I use three... AVG, Windows Defender (it's free and actually does the job very well) and one other that I can't remember the name of (I'm at work so I can't check). I just alternate on the system scans.

I've used pretty much every major AV solution out there in the last 10 years, and I'm using Avast! now. It's free, it works, and it's reasonably light on resources.

I've only ever had one virus, and that was using norton and was on XP sp1 with IE. Bleh

Avast! + Firefox + Windows Defender keeps my system ticking along nicely now.

As for spending the money on a Mac.. hmm are they less than $50 now?

I would say Avast. Avast would be my number one pick. If not Avast, I would go with AVG or AntiVir. They are all free.

I love Avast, and you can't beat the price for Home use. Having said that, I'm running Norton 360 2.0 now, and I'm pretty impressed with it. It is no doubt the program I would choose to install on relatives' PCs as it does a great job with protection and is virtually invisible for dummy users. 2.0 is acceptable now for me as it allows more manual control if needed, too.

NOD32. They have a fantastic installation PDF, it updates daily, it doesn't chew up your memory, etc etc. Best by a mile!

Used to use Nortons and Avira, now I'm using NOD32 too. Was using Defender in addition to NOD32 but found that it slowed down my internet connection.
