at&t tilt headphone jack conversion issue

I Have an att tilt and want to use it with my head unit in my car to play music. I bought the mini usb to headphone jack converter and everything fits great, but the music continues to come out of the main speaker on the phone. If any of you kind ladies and gentleman could please point out what I'm certain is user error..... I would be quite thankful. HOOK IT UP PALLLEEEEZZZEEE..... Thanks...
