SSD = solid state disk

solid state disks are (generally) faster, run cooler, are silent and have no moving parts.

they're less likely to become damaged if dropped or exposed to shock

also hella expensive as you've discovered

The SSD drives are also very new and though expensive you should've seen the prices for the first few drives to market.

I'm waiting for the prices to drop even more and the capacities to go up but that could take a while.

could you theoretically replace out a standard laptop hard drive into a ssd drive? that would be a pretty good upgrade when the prices drop, dont ya think?

Anyone, or hear of someone, run a setup with just the OS on the SSD drive and notice much in the way of performance increase?

The transfer speed is crap!
The seek times are GREATLY reduced though.
There are MANY SSD reviews and comparisons.

Ultimately, it would be nice to see full SSD disks replace hard drives in the near future, but eh, its not gonna happen. As time goes on we will be seeing more hybrid drives which accomplish the best of both.

ok,
so from what i've read, ssd vs. hd is almost a wash.... here's what i have found.

transfer speed - ssd
read/write speed - hd
burst - hd
seek time - ssd
capacity - hd
battery life - ssd
price - hd
durability - ssd

4-4... even but given the price and capacity with the new technology, its almost a wash...

so this brings me to a question that i've been looking for an answer... ive been looking at the sony tz series.... from the tz150(cheapest is around 2k) and the tz190+ at about high 2900's.... does this 900 give you that needed extra in an ultraportable laptop? help me!
thx!
