Here is a little noise generator which is great if you want to burn-in a new pair of 'phones or amp. Free trail version which isn't limit there is just a small splash screen, nothing horrible. Soundmasker - Free trial - Noise Masking For The PC - White Noise / Brown Noise / Privacy Presets - Suitable for Home or Office

Indeed! I love them all.
They just happen to be open-source as well. Coincidence? Hardly.

The following are for Windows:
  • Launchy, a keystroke app launcher--easily one of my favorites. (Freeware.)

  • XNeat lets you rearrange taskbar items (immensely useful to me, as I place my currently most-in-use tasks to the upper-left of my two-row taskbar); and also lets you keep certain windows on top (with or without transparency), and more. (Freeware.)

  • Comfort Clipboard Pro, which is the best clipboard manager I've used so far (let's you keep oft-used items you'd want to keep handy in a clipboard in a favorites area for quick reference, and supports all clippable formats). (Shareware.)

Everybody using Windows should ditch Adobe Acrobat Reader and install Foxit Reader.

- MediaCoder (digital audio file format transcoder)
- NoteTab Light (Windows Notepad replacement)
- PDFCreator (PDF printer)
- RazorLame (LAME GUI front-end)
- Spybot Search & Destroy (the defs aren't comprehensive but its Immunize feature is excellent and extremely useful)

I love threads like these.

Here's some relatively boring Windoze free-ware (at worse nag-ware) I use regularly:
  • cygwin -- If practical considerations (i.e., work-issued equipment) prevent you from running Linux, cygwin this may be the ticket. (GNU/POSIX FTW!)
  • Notepad++ -- I find this very useful (as the name implies) as a notepad replacement (on steroids). Also very useful as an IDE augmentation.
  • Winmerge -- Its free. It works.
  • Baregrep -- Free version. Works reasonably well--especially when added as a "Send To" target. Not really necessary with cygwin.
  • BareTail -- Works as advertised. Not really necessary with cygwin.

Another vote for Ubuntu (Kubuntu, to be specific). I just switched about 2 months ago - bye bye Windoze!

As for other free stuff, I agree that VLC works great (in Windoze and in Linux!).

Music-wise, I miss MediaMoney
