So who bought a Macbook Air?
just curious. I saw it on the Today show a couple weeks back and it looked REALLY flimsy. Should be expected with how thin it is, but how does it perform?
That 60GB flash HD should be LIGHTNING fast, but I can't find anything on it. Boot up should be like nothing...as goes for everyday operations...
I dunno why people didn't think of this before. I mean how many people REALLY use thier DVD drive or other slots on a REGULAR basis to warrant really having to lug it around. I can count the times on one hand where I've used my DVD drive.

The word you're looking for is "thin" as in it looks really thin.
It's not really flimsy at all, from handling one at the store. The ssd drives aren't shipping yet tho.

Well, that too. When the staff was passing it around on TV, it looked like it was flopping all over the place, more so than a regular laptop monitor does. But I guess if you handled one in person, it lays that one to rest.
I had no idea they were'nt shipping yet, but it's a nice thing to know. You think it'll be lighting click-loaded fast?
I refuse to goto the Apple Store next to my work. It's a madhouse in there. The only store in the mall that made more money in 07, and we're not talking profit margin or anything, we're talking gross numbers/dolalr amount, was Dillards. Not Louie Vitton, not Coach, Juicy, Urban Outfitters, Gap, Banana Republic, not even the restaurants like Cheesecake Factory, PF Chang's and Maggiano's...just Dillards. Christ.

I wasn't aware Dillards was even in business still!

I feel sorry for anyone who bought a Macbook Air now... just wait a few months and they'll either drop the price by a lot or upgrade the components. I hope Apple knee-jerkers haven't already forgotten about last year's iPhone nerd tax.

I hear in other forums that the SSD is super fast. I think there are some benchmarks floating around that show that the SSD has significantly faster read and write speeds for non-sequential stuff, like booting or quotidian operations. If you're working with large files, like video, it seems like the HDD still has a slight edge. Where the SSD really shines, though, is in how the computer "feels" - all surveys point to "significantly snappier" in things like app loading time, Spotlight, boot times, etc.

Thin is in: Ars Technica reviews the MacBook Air: Page 1
If I understand their review correctly, this thing has the performance of a UMPC/MID.
Is having a bigger screen really worth having such a large unit? (When compared to UMPC's in the same price range, such as the OQO 02.)

Even with the flash drive, the ram it uses is not very fast imo. I know it was necessary to be so thin, but its a whole bunch of integrated ram that collectively make up 2 gigs. 667 hz, if I remember correctly. I think I'd wait a while for an update, rather than buying now; either cheaper ssd, or better ram.

Macbook Air Dissection
Anyone else see that and notice which brand headphone adapter and presumably headphone is plugged into the Air.

Eh, I don't think that slow HDD had too much bearing over the overall performance, but I agree that it probably had some influence over it.

There are threads discussing the release of the MBA and therefore more suited to conversation from members here VS actual owners. Can anyone chime in whom has purchased the MBA as the title reads?
Would be interesting in a weird ironic way to hear from an owner with one in his/her possession -- I think

I planned to check it out, and most probably buy one.
But after reading about the crappy battery time I am not sure any more..

I suggest you check out a UMPC like an OQO (I know I've said that before). It just seems much more convenient and usable than a MBA.

Not sure what UMPC and OQO are.
But I am perfectly happy with my 15" MacBook Pro, until Apple release a "worthy" successor for their 12" PowerBook G4.
