Wow... your Alltel requirement slipped right past me. Sorry... consider it a brain fart. Was too engrossed in my tunes.

anyone using verizon wireless?
i am also gonna get a palm device next month, and i have no idea what to get. a friend of mine suggest blackberry pearl. however, i trust head-fi'ers more when it comes to this kinda stuff.

i want something that lets me browse web with ease. i really need it b/c my company recently started blocking all the websites. many of the websites that i visit (including head-fi!!!) while slacking are going to be blocked off in a few weeks. =(

Well, I don't think the BlackBerry Pearl would be for you then. The browser really scrunches things up. You basically need to visit sites that were made for mobile devices.

An interesting solution would be to get a smartphone that can handle tethering, and then purchase a cheap, portable laptop such as the Asus EeePC (~$300-$400 USD). You could then use your smartphone as a modem. With Alltel, it's $10/month more for the tethering ability, I'm not sure about the other major carriers. It may be a bit difficult to set up, but it could be fun once you get it going!

Anyway, my Pearl is awesome. I can get any POP3/IMAP e-mail sent directly to my phone. It will even notify me with a chime when I get one, if I wish. I can also send e-mail from it. Texting is WAY easier than with a standard phone, and the ability to visit websites like Google Maps could really come in handy if I ever get lost. The call quality is superb, surprisingly better than any other cell phone I've ever owned. It's also the smallest phone I've ever had, which is surprising considering everything that it does. I wish I could have gotten it 2 years ago!

I'm looking for something from Alltel, so I don't have a whole lot of choices. For what I want in a plan Alltel is basically the cheapest, and my current plan is with them, so I'm already familiar with their service.

In the flip/slider realm, basically the Motorola Razr2 and the LG Glimmer are the frontrunners. I like the size of the Razr2, and the Glimmer is kinda neat because of the touchscreen interface as well as the regular number pad, although it has a real sissy name.

For the smart phones, the BlackBerry Pearl, BlackBerry Curve, and Moto Q are the leaders. I'm pretty interested in a smart phone because I'll be starting my career as a mechanical engineer soon, and I want to help keep myself organized. Also the ability to get internet on the go is pretty cool, especially if I can pair the phone up with my Asus EeePC.

So does anybody have experience with any of these phones? Any useful advice about smart phones and what to look for and/or avoid?

EDIT: Ooops didn't read the post carefully.

Blackberry Pearl or Moto Q are both good. Personally prefer Pearl, reception on Moto isn't that great around my area.

I had the BB Pearl for 5 days. Great phone.

The predictive text is spot on but I felt the KB was too small for me so I just exchanged it for the BB Curve. Still trying it out but I already love the big KB and screen

If you use Verizon Wireless, and your company does not de-install USB ports (how paranoid are they?), then you can surf the web all day without a smartphone. Just get Verizon's USB adapter version of their EVDO network connect. You can add it to your cell phone plan for $59.95 a month and get FAST web access nearly any place in a big city. Just plug the device in to your USB port, flip up the antenna, and bang! the web is yours.

I love it when I go to other companies and some self-important I.T. guys says "I'm sorry, you can't connect to our LAN". I say "worry not, I am already on the 'net".

Sprint and AT&T (EDGE) have the same thing. I understand Sprint's is very fast. I can say that books download to my Kindle in a flash, and that's Sprint (via Amazon).

FYI you guys, the Blackberry 9000/Bold has been announced.

AT&T to be first US carrier with BlackBerry Bold - Engadget

Like the link says, AT&T will be the first carrier for the model.

Wow, that looks nice! Although glossy stuff is really appealing, I don't really like it because of how susceptible it is to scratching.
