Do you have Amtrak service on the commute? You can often get tickets for less than gasoline would cost; we use it to go to Arizona and back regularly.
It's far from perfect, but still, if I can get off the roads I usually do. Tickets are one thing, wrecks are another. Not to mention wear and tear, breakdowns and even regular service.
There are other benefits, too. Take your books, magazines, laptop, and headphones (!). There is a bathroom a short walk away and there's usually a dining car where you can get a Coke and something to eat. And take a nap if you want. Entirely better than driving, even if it takes longer.
Also, I used to make about a 15 hour drive each way from Oregon to LA when I was in school. It's tough to keep your concentration together and your guard up over such a long trip. At the very least, split it over two days so you'll be fresh and making good decisions on the road. I had a few places I'd stay along the way and I looked forward to local restaurants, usually took in a movie, and always made a bit of a vacation out of it.

Don't get caught with either one in Virginia. You will regret it....Here, it is against state law and the fines are very stiff, even more than the speeding ticket that you would also be tagged with if caught using one.
Valentine One. I have one and I'm floored at how well it works. I don't "speed". I drive with the flow of traffic (yes - it's technically speeding), but I don't drive like a crazy person.
The V1 has saved me many a time. Sometimes down the long hill being first in line etc. etc... It won't save you from everything, but it's amazing none the less.
The V1 has three major settings (and a slew of minor ones). They are: All bogies, filter 1 and filter 2. By changing one of the other settings to disable POP (or something similar), I'm real happy with the sensitivity.
It does still pick up auto-doors. The Escort's GPS feature is cool, and I've wished I had it more than once, but then I've seen cops sitting in parking lots with the radar on - the same lots where there are lots of auto doors. You get lulled and he's there.
The V1 shows the source direction and the number of sources. I quickly know if someone is hiding because the signature is different.
The V1 is sort of the thinking man's detector. You need to understand what it's telling you for some alerts, but I like that. I'd rather have detailed info that I can make decisions on rather than a generic alert.
I'm not up on the latest escort display, but when I was looking a year or so ago, the V1 gave more info.
IIRC, the V1 has a 30-day money back deal, so you could try one. I went with the hard-wired option, then put a remote display on the steering column. Awesome.
