I'm going to be making a 15 hour drive from Connecticut to Ohio many times over the next couple of years and after getting incorrectly ticketd (radar with no audio doppler tone in heavy traffic), I've decided I must take countermeasures.
Right now I can only afford one or the other - a top flight radar detector or a top flight laser jammer. The ones I am considering are the Escort Passport 9500i or the Laser Intercepter diode based active laser jammer.
The laser jammer is a whopping $650 but uses actual laser diodes instead of the wimpy LED's that many use. The detector would be nice because it's a heck of a lot cheaper at $499, but I'm scared that on the highway laser is more often used (especially in PA and Ohio).
If you could get one or the other, what would you do?
I think the choice between a radar detector and laser jammer would definitely be dependent on the area that you plan on traveling through. Here in Houston, I have been tagged by many more radars than lasers. My valentine 1 radar detector has served me well, saving me out of 4 tickets so far. However, with radar detectors once that laser indicator and sound goes off, you're likely in ticketland lol. On a side note I'm actually not a speed demon. It's just that often times I travel with the flow of traffic on the highway or through unfamiliar areas, and a radar detector will keep me in check.

So you got a speeding ticket, while not speeding? Radar dectors/jammers don't "work" as one would expect.
Correct. The cop used radar without his doppler audio turned on. There was a caravan of cars and I was the last one. If you know how radar worls (I'm assuming you don't by your skepticism), than you would know that at a distance of only 50 feet the beam covers both lanes. At several hundred feet, a 12 degree beam is well over a hundred feet wide. The cop had no way of knowing which car was speeding. I took it to court and beat it - he was clueless on the cross examination.
I don't plan on having to waste my valuable time in court again because of the laziness of our police officers.
So what it tells you there's a cop nearby, if he's scanning for speeders, you'll get caught anyways. Radar jammers don't work, look at the above link.
I never asked for a radar jammer. Those are illegal. I did ask for a laser jammer. LED based jammers and shifters used to work; those are now rendered irrevalent by the new police guns. The Laser Interceptor is a Laser diode based technology, which is hundreds of times more powerful than the older LED based ones. This jammer jams 100% of current use LIDAR units all the way until the gun with 2 diode heads installed on the front of the car and 2 on the rear. It is essentially 99.9% undefeatable. There are tests on guys of lidar that prove so.
Radar, on the other hand, is illegal to be jammed. Luckily the dispersion is much wider than a laser, which you can't pick upbeam splatter from. In the real world, you can get a KA band radar reading a mile or two down the road from the trooper. Even if he uses IO you can detect the burst with a good detector.
You're parents never told you not to speed? Or do they encourage it, hence your question?
My parents encourage me going the same rate as surrounding traffic. In my area, on a 65mph highway, the average speed is 80mph. That's just the way it is. Old women, minivans, everyone. It is UNSAFE to go 65 in certain areas around here. My parents recognized that when teaching me to drive.
My advice to you, save your money for when you have to pay for the ticket.

Turn it into an 18 hour drive. If your driving record and time are important enough that you can't appear in court you should consider flying.

It sounds like you need to gather some intelligence as to whether laser or radar is more common in your area. From your descriptions, it sounds like you're going to get both eventually anyway. Considering that the laser jammer sounds like a much more effective device, I would probably buy that first, unless you can uncover some info that makes you think radar is a MUCH more significant threat in your area.
Speed limits in general are wholly outdated and in many instances were instituted only to effect fuel savings following the Carter-era gas crisis. I have no problem with driving slowly in a residential area, shopping center, near a school, etc. But when I have a car that gets 37MPG going 80MPH down the highway in bright, sunny weather, what is really so wrong about it? Most people seem to agree. Now the creeps that keep going that fast in fog and/or snow/ice are the ones that really piss me off.
