I wish I had my headphone setup hooked up to it to tell, as far as I can say...I don't hear much of a differnece but my HT system is far from audiophile-grade.
Just out of interest how many of you PS3 owners have installed another OS (ie Yellow Dog Linux)? I would consider buying a PS3 if I was sure that I could utilize the Cell processors multiple cores to encode music.
I purchased a PS3 20GB used and it's been fantastic. I got it so I could rent Blu-Ray movies from Netflix. It's played every one of them wthout any problems. Unlike my Toshiba HD-XA1 which doesn't like any HD DVDs from Netflix. They have to be brand new discs without any scratches or wear.

I do not have mine running Yellow Dog, but I am curious what kind of encoding you plan on doing. The PS3 can rip CDs to its hard drive in a few different formats.
does the PS3 play PS2 and PS1 games effectively, or even better? Does it use software emulation or is there a PS2 chip on there somewhere? It would be great to be able to play PS2 games with more horsepower, because some of them slow down no matter what you do.
Right now I have to keep my PS1 plugged in because the PS2 (2 of them so far) won't play FFT music without artifacting.

From what I have read, I do not believe that the new $399 model is backward compatible, but the rest of them should be.

Just the usual Ogg vorbis with FLAC backups but also DVD conversions (to .avi for my clix), I was wondering if the PS3 can use all seven cores (or even two) under Linux as this would be alot faster than my current 2.4GHz P4 which takes over two hours per DVD.
