Did some googling (procrastination ftw). It seems this is a common problem with the 40 gig.

Buy a can of compressed air and blow it through the vents in the case. As they age, dust will accumulate inside causing the fan to run faster. I sit about 6 feet from my 40GB model and, while I can hear it, it's not intrusive.

I already gave it a good cleaning. did some googling myself, seems the newer models use a smaller processor core and dropped some of the legacy chips, resulting in lower power consumption. Less power - less heat, less fan noise...

hmm i might have to tootle down to Circuit City and pick up a new model to compare it to this weekend. I should be able to return the new one if i don't like it right? 30 days satisfaction guarantee and all that

Fankly as is, it's a non starter for me for Home theater use.. oh well.

Update..!!

I just tried a new 80GB system from Costco, and it's not a great deal quieter.. I think i just have overly sensitive ears.. mind you i'm the guy who had to keep the kitchen door closed or the noise of the refidgerator annoys me.. and I can hear the flourescent light bulb in this room.

Well, who wants to buy a 60GB PS3?

Oh and I'm returning the new one too.. even that was too loud for my tastes, if that gives you an idea how fussy I am

There we go, I fixed that for you. NTSC has the chip, as does the old 20 GB.
