I should say, that the best deal for an ultra fast 'people' lens seems to be the Canon 24-70mm at about 1050$, ~500$ less than the nikon.
If you KNOW you need the ultra fast, just tough it out, save up for some extra time, and buy one at the higher price.
Pentax is interesting as a camera company........... but............. you're very limited by the lenses! My friend at work loves his Pentax K10D, but the poor guy just doesn't have the availability of lenses that one would have with a nikon or canon kit.
I think your body is really what's holding you back. If you want to stick to Nikkor AF-S, used you'll still be looking at nearly a grand. I don't pay that much attention to 3rd party brands, but I'm pretty sure Tamron makes something that will auto focus with DX format.
You'd be better of selling your D40(or returning it) and finding a D50 or D70. This way you can get older AF lenses that are pro quality w/o hurting your wallet. I'll second the recommendation on using a fast prime like the 50mm 1.8. About a $100, fast, light and compact. It'll help you better compose your images too since you have to think about your shot more because you can't zoom.

Nikon is primarily an optics company, I'd go with a 28mm, and 50mm prime, later you can get an 85mm which is great for portraits and candids, or even a nice wide zoom lens.
I currently shoot the Tamron 17-50mm and I find it extremely sharp and perfect for my needs, I would like to upgrade to a D300 and the new 24-70mm and a wide third-party prime for live band photography.
Another thing you should consider is lighting, google strobism or off-camera lighting for more information on how to greatly improve your photography.
Take a look at my flicker page in my sig too if you have the time.
@dj_mocok. I think you ment 35-70mm, not 37. No biggie.
To the OP:
I think if you can hold out a few weeks, the 16-85mm VR nikkor (link) will be for sale. Again, not an ultra fast lens, but it covers the range you are looking at and has VR to boot.
It's interesting that you say you find it easier to frame pictures with a F2.8 lens compared to a F3.5. I haven't noticed any difference personally, but if you need an ultra fast mid range to wide angle zoom......... sadly....... they are pricey.
Not so much frame, I suppose, but rather "successfully capture." In many situations, I just can't seem to take properly exposed pictures with shutter speeds fast enough to prevent image blurr - especially in sports photography.
Regardless, however, I now plan to stick with Nikon and purchase the 17-50 Tamron - imminently awaiting an upgrade to the Nikkor 17-55.

AF-S just means Silent (*i think*). What you need is for the lens to be IF, internal Focus. Off brand's may use their own term to mean 'IF'.
You might be right - but I always thought IF implied that the external lens barrel doesn't move in or out when focusing; and not that the lens has its own focus drive built in.
EDIT: I came across this press release when scouring the Tamron site for information: Tamron AF70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di LD 1:2 Macro From what I can tell, it appears as though the new 17-50 is designed to autofocus with the D40, which in turn implies that the current 17-50 is manual focus only.
