Hi! I'm thinking about buying a multifunctional inkjet printer for home use and the main candidates for my budget seem to be the Canon Pixma MP 520 and the somewhat more expensive HP Photosmart C 5280. I care especially for reliability and I might have to print or copy some thousands of pages (black and white only), so I will refill the black ink cartridge quite often.
Which one would you choose? Do you have experience with how reliable are the current Canon or HP models? Or perhaps you would prefer another similarly priced printer from a different brand?

If you are going to print out a lot of B&W pages, I suggest getting a laser multi-function. In the long run, it's going to be MUCH cheaper to run than an inkjet, especially if you can refill your own toner.
I like Samsung laser printers and multifunctions. I suggest getting a B&W laser multifunction and an inkjet printer to use for when you need color.
Where will you be buying these printers?

I'll buy from Romania, where I live.
Sorry for the stupid question, but why would be a laser printer save money on the long run? I know nothing about laser printers except for the higher price...

For example my own samsung monocrome Laser printer (only printing not multi-function) it cost about $10(ebay shipped) of ink for a 3000 pages. If I refill myself. EDIT: And that was a while ago since I don't print that much I guess now I can get toner refill $6 shipped for even more ink per refill if I buy 4 at the time.
It would be more expensive if I try to buy the official cartrige but toner refill for my model is extreamly easy. There is a plastic cap to open pour in powder toner with the funnel provide by the place I bought the toner. Close done.

Laser printers let you print faster and cheaper. It will cost roughly $20 for an inkjet cartridge here in Canada, which will print 200-300 pages. A 3000-page LASER cartridge only costs about $60. So, for 3x the price of ink you can print for 10x the amount of pages.
This is for black and white prints. For colour prints, the advatange is less, because colour laser toner is expensive.

My first laser printer was on it's 2nd toner cartridge after 10 years when the platen needed to be replaced. I got a new printer instead. I've had it over a year with no maintenance needed. For a lot of inkjet printers, cartridges last a few months and cost almost as much as a new printer, at least here in the US.
Agree with all of the advice here- if you are going to do a lot of black and white printing, go with a laser. With inkjet printers the cost doesn't come from the initial purchase, but the high cost of buying ink. Toner for laser printers is much cheaper, even when you buy it from a store. If you buy your own refill kits from eBay, it's even cheaper. I bought a refill kit with 6 refill cartridges and it only cost me $20. I spent $100 on this cheap laser printer and I get 20ppm at 1200dpi. If I were to do it again, I would probably spend another $50 and get a network laser printer, and maybe an extra $150 and get a colour laser printer.
I have the Canon Pixma iP4500 (photo color printer, sadly, not all-in-one ) at home, and it's great.
Love the colors when I'm printing pictures, and the duplex printing option is great for the 20-30 page documents I have to print out for school.
I've had it for a bit more than half a year now, and it works really well!
Also, I've noticed that Canon cartridges are somewhat less expensive than other brands.
However, if you need to print thousands of pages in black and white, you should go with a laser printer, as others above have stated.
I like Canons after using many brands at home and work and now have a Pixma MP520 that replaced a 3 year old Canon S560. They consistently win best of class awards. It's a great printer for speed, quality and ease of use. Photo printing is great and scanning is easy and fast. We use a lot more of the black ink too, no big deal just buy extra black cartridges. It doesn't have fax - I think you'd need the MP530 for that. Highly recommended!
