Yeah, I'm planning to buy it at Best Buy, because of the easy return service should anything go wrong, and my dad refuses to let me buy online where if it comes to me "bad," then at least I won't have to go through the hassle of shipping it all the way back.
The XTi is $700 right now at Best Buy.
I'm about to leave though, and one of my stops is going to be CC, so I'll be bringing along a SD card so I can take experimental photos, then look at them once I get home.

The XSi really isn't that much better than the XTi, though - and the OP can probably do better than the 18-55 (which isn't bad, I should mention) with the difference in price.
Yea, I've no experience with it (I use an XTI, with no intention to upgrade yet). I'm still surprised by its price. I've seen a friend's flickr, though. His shots look fantastic; he's got zero experience with DSLR's. It would make my decision little more taxing if I were buying today. I'd say it's difficult to really screw up your purchase.

Bah, guess I'll be trying out both the XTi and the XSi.

Very true. Pretty much all DSLR's these days (entry-level or pro) offer stunning image quality at low ISO settings - and it doesn't hurt that manufacturers are getting much more competitive with feature sets and lens design. That's probably why so many people are trading in their point and shoots these days: camera's are getting more user friendly, cheaper, and still better in terms of image quality and technology.

Try to talk your Dad into letting you buy online on the way. Throw a big-ole tantrum.
Saving tax and that mark up, you could clean up on accessories (read: tripod) and/or the 50mm 1.4.
Good luck.
Haha will do. I agree, buying online saves at least $100, so it'll be worth it in the end.
(By the way, it took me awhile to realize that your avatar was of a platypus' spur)

Yep, Jude has a macro in the PYPH thread @ ISO 800 with the XSI. Look pretty damn good.
To be fair in 2 senses, however, ISO 800 isn't particularly high, and Canon is renowned for its low-noise sensors and effective noise reduction. Even my D200 couldn't have taken that clean a shot beyond IS0 500, however.

Used Canon 20D with a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8. That will walk all over the Nikon entry level stuff.
That's a bit of an over-statement. I bought a 20D to replace my D50 and sold the 20D within a few weeks of buying it. High ISO performance was better and the 5fps was nice but colors looked off to me and AF accuracy wasn't as good imo as the Nikon D70s/D50. Shots out of the D50 required far less PP than the Canon but maybe that's just because I'm used to Nikon. Just my two cents.
