I have enough access to WiFi and when I don't Edge seems to do ok. I had a 3G phone (not iPhone obviously) and I have to admit 3G speed is awesome out on the road when WiFi is not around.

I would be tempted if they offered (in addition to 3G) 32/64GB of storage, a better camera and longer battery life. MicroSD expansion would be a big plus too.
I absolutely LOVE my iPhone, we don't have a 3g network here in Iowa (AFAIK) but if the phone is significantly better I'll upgrade. I'm looking for thinner, bigger storage, better Edge/wifi speeds and just an overall better phone. If so I'll definitely upgrade.

I think external expansion is a no no with Apple.
firstly it doesn't allow them to tightly control the cards people will use, and that slow cards might give off a perception that it's the iphone/ipod that's slow, and therefore the product is less than optimal.
Also, If you can expand it, then how will they sell you a new one when you fill it? Seems that the conspicuous lack of an expansion port is a very deliberate choice, and if apple wanted to add one, they'd have done it a long long time ago.
I fear battery life will suffer if 3g is used. I know a couple of people with 3g phones and when they get online with the 3g goodness, the battery life is pretty poor.
But you never know with apple. Won't be cheap though, that's for sure ;/

Even if they charge an insane amount for the handset in addition to extortionate monthly tarrifs?
The UK O2 16GB iPhone package is boarderline acceptable: £329 + £35/month for 18 months. £35 gives you more than enough minutes/txts plus practically unlimited data usage. I only take issue with the long contract period. 12 months would've been more reasonable.
I thought us Brits had it bad, but no. The Irish have really been screwed over by O2:
€499 for 16GB + €45/month for 18 months. Not too bad right? Here's the killer: 175 minutes, 100 texts and 1GB data.
