So I didn't have time to go to a bike shop until yesterday. I went to Mike's Bikes and The Missing Link. A road bike would be nicer than a hybrid/commuter. At least that was the mindset I had going in. Mike's Bikes didn't have anything in their inventory my size and price range, though they did ask to get a Rocky Mountain Solo 10 transferred from one of their stores, so I can try it out in a day or two. I ended up trying out a Trek 1.2T (apparently the successor to the Trek 1000) at The Missing Link.

It was a nice ride, but I couldn't get any lower than $700. Is that a good price? I still dunno if I could justify spending that much on a bike. But I am trying to think long-term and would rather get something that will last, as I do typically get "into" hobbies the more I do them.

I have checked out Craigslist for road bikes my size (which apparently is a 54).

I came up with http://sfbay.craigslist.org/search/b...min&maxAsk=max. I'm not quite sure if there's anything there I should look into.

This Cannondale T400 or this Iron Horse Excelsior looks intriguing.

Should I worry if I go used? I don't mind learning/doing basic bike maintenance (I don't know anything yet).

700 sounds okay to me. Are you getting cycling shoes as well?

Perhaps later on. But I'm gonna take one step at a time for now.

I like the the looks of the Trek 400 Elance for $175 on the craiglist. Reynolds 531 is a good quality tubing. I don't know if 54 cm is the right size for you. If you don't like it I'm sure you could sell it easy. The roads in the Bay Area are fine for a bike like that. That would be my choice.

I'm about 5'8"ish. Both bike shops I went to estimated me to be about 54 cm. The bike I tried at 54cm was pretty comfortable. Does that sound about right? That bike definitely looks interesting, too.

Should be close - maybe a bit small. I notice that the bike lists the top tube(54 cm) first and then the seat tube(51 cm). So if the bike shop measures you to be 54 and this 51 cm(if they measured you by the seat tube) that would be a difference of a little more than an inch (1 inch = 2.54 cm). I'm not sure how they measure people/bikes but that bike should be okay.

I like the looks of bikes like that so I am biased towards it. I think if it is reasonable condition that seems like a good price. You would have to ride it find out for sure if you like it.

To size road bikes I use the formula:
0.67 x inseam
where the inseam measurement is crotch to floor in your socks.
Working backwards you have a 31.7 inch (80.6 cm) inseam for a 54 cm bike (per Trek specs).

(For mt bikes use 0.52 x inseam.)

Of the Craiglist items for $700, the Klein and the Kestral piqued my interest.

imo, I would not buy the Cannondale, at least not T400. That model has ovalized, oversized Al tubing, lightweight, strong but rigid, great for sprinters with watermelon thighs, but a newbie will be very uncomfortable.

Thanks. I'd prefer to stay under $500, especially if I go through craigslist. Do any of the cheaper bikes look reasonable to you? I am inquiring about the Klein. The price is reasonable, and it's aluminum.

I do, in fact, work for Wilson, Ihrig. You've heard of them? Broadway is hilly but I'll probably avoid Broadway for the most part. It seems flatter a couple blocks west.

Hm. 51 seems a bit small then. I dunno, I feel like I should at least get a bike that's the right size.

How about that Schwinn LeTour 10 speed for $225?
