How Do I Adjust Maual Controls on a D40?

I am basically a pre-schooler when it comes to this whole DSLR thing, and thus as I explore the menu system of my D40 I'm discovering that I have absolutely no idea how to easily adjust certain manual image controls using the status screen or any of the camera's many buttons, despite frequent, agonizing searches (I can't seem to locate shutter speed or aperature settings, for example - even on full manual mode).

As such, I was hoping that some of the more photographically inclined Head-Fi'ers with previous D40 experience could give me a basic schooling on how to adjust the many image-changing functions that the camera utilizes; and ideally explain how such functions affect the resulting picture.

Just got a d40 myself. To adjust the shutter you spin the wheel. To adjust aperature you hold the +/- button near the shutter release button and then spin the wheel. You will notice numbers changing in the viewfinder or on the display. In fact on the display you will see a visual image of the aperature getting bigger and smaller with the spinning of the wheel.

Assuming the D40 has a similar configuration as the D50, set it in manual, hold down the button and spin the wheel. It should change the aperture, which changes from F5, F5.6, then F6 and so on. In order to change the shutter speed just spin the wheel and the number will go up and down.
