Looking to get a GPS unit for my mom for Xmas, just not sure what to look for so I'll ask the gurus of Gadget-Fi.
After peeking through Amazon I have my eye on the Garmin Streetpilot C340. I thought about the Garmin Nuvi 350 for about $80-90 more but she has diminishing eyesight and thought it would be too small for her.
All I'm looking for is an easy-to-use, reliable, voice-rendered GPS unit that will get her where she wants to go, any other recommendations?
Thanks,
Chris

I own a Tomtom One and just through my usage my mother purchased one for herself. I'm a gadget nerd like all of us here, but for this purpose, I wanted something very simple that does what it does well, and I've been satisfied by the Tomtom. The screensize isn't any bigger than the Garmin, but Tomtom semi-recently released the Tomtom One XL, which has a significantly larger screen.
The only downside for your purposes I see is that it will not pronounce the street names for you. It will just say "In 100 yards, turn left. Then, turn right." This hasn't been a problem for me, but you may want to consider that when purchasing the GPS. If you think it is a necessity, look for GPS units that specifically cite "Text-to-speach."
I received my Garmin from Amazon last thursday. Charged it. (already charged) Took it out to the car. Read the little guide. Fired it up. Drove it out of the garage. Took less then one second to lock on to a bunch of satellites. Put in my home address. Put in the address of a Toyota dealership about 30 miles from home. Hit go. Dead on. What a great llttle device. I'm amazed. I will probably give my maps to Goodwill.

I have been rolling a nuvi 350 since taking my friends nuvi out on loan last year. since then (right afterwards) i bought mine.
Sometimes she gets a bit slow or weird but its .01% of the time. i am thinking of upgrading her to the traffic version cause Chicago seems to suck with Traffic and it would help a lot if she knows there is traffic. other then that I use mine almost once a day, even if i dont need to (she is hard wired in the car). awesome device and finder the Nuvi has inside when you spell the name is amazing! i found a bunch of 24hr animal hosp's one night when i needed one locally. I might upgrade her in the future but i wont live with out her again and thats for sure!
The speaking device used is pretty good also, she actually says "arriving at Ray Samuel's house". one person she says the actual name of the person..
Any of you Nuvi 350 folks find the voice difficult to comprehend? I had a 350 and returned it because the sound quality on the slim GPS was horrific. I could hear that it was talking but I could not understand it, even though I tried multiple English dialects. I have a Pioneer GPS now which has aweful software but at least I understand the lady.
Through the recent black friday ads I was made aware of the Navigon 2100. It has text-to-speech, built in traffic update, and various places are having a special by including life-time traffic update for free!
I use a Mio C310x that I got from last year's black friday. It's been hacked and updated, and I'm familiar with the iGo interface, so I'm sticking with it even though it does not have text-to-speech.

I just got the 350. So far it works great. A bit slow in picking up the satellite on my street and I wish that it calculated routes a bit faster, but I am an inpatient fellow. No trouble understanding the voice. But then again, I have golden ears.

On Thanksgiving, I picked up a Garmin Nuvi 660 for $399 from Best Buy. I should receive it tomorrow and have read nothing but good things about it. Am looking forward to seeing it. It seems the price is back up to $799 on the BB site now. It seems Garmin GPS units are fairly popular and user-friendly.
