My neighbor is a professional photographer and he recommended B&H Photo to me and I bought the exact camera that you're looking at from them. They are reliable, have good prices, and excellent customer service...
I bought the Rebel XTi from Amazon last summer. Good price, great entry level DSLR. I bought mine without the lens kit, because previously I'd been shooting a Canon EOS 1n (main) and an EOS A2E (backup) in 35mm format as a semi-professional and have a lot of lenses that I wanted to be able to keep using, field of view compensation not withstanding....
I've been really impressed with the XTi. If you get one though, I'd seriously recommend getting the body only and upgrading to a better lens. The kit lens is pretty bad.....

I think I will buy from Amazon. BH is out of stock right.
Regarding the lens, my friend is totally new to photography. He just wants try something new. I guess, if he finds himself into this, he can buy some serious lens later.
Are there any good camera forums ?
I remember I saw one similar to Head-fi (at least the buy/sell section).
I think I may sell my XTi if you're interested. I'm in NYC. PM me if you are.
My preferred stores are B&H and J&R also.

My advice to you:
- Use your own ears as everybody's hearing and preferences are different.
- Try to audition as much equipment as possible to find your sound.
- Buy used to save money.
B&H is probably the best option. Camera prices are essentially the same everywhere and B&H is where pro guys go because they are dependable and fair. My photo teacher who's been shooting digital for more than 15 years will always recommend B&H from his own experiences.
