I am in a simlar boat as my notebook cd/dvd drive is going bad. I have looked around, and it seems like it is cheaper to get an external burner rather than a replacement for my internal drive with the same specs. I have found that the drives seem to cost more if they are internal replacements than i they are externals. Is that the general consensus?
went ahead and ordered that LITE-ON one. What does everyone use for burning, isnt exact audio copy the best to get the best bit rate, or will i have to use nero?

I'm on a Mac, so I'll be using Toast for all my burning. On a Windows box you can use any burning program, so long as it sees the drive (which it should).

Got the Lite On today, works great! A little quirky on my Mac, and it wont run on bus power alone, but other than that it does what I need.

This thread could not have caught my eye at a better time.
The DVD drive in my MBP has gone fut.
Does anyone have any external DVD drive suggestions that are compatible with Mac's? All i have seen so far is Lacie. The LG ones look great, but don't seem to work on a Mac.
Cheers!

The Lite On I mentioned a few posts up works with my MacBook Pro. It's $67, is a dvd burner with LightScribe, the only downside to me is it's not bus powered, so you have to use it with the ac adapter. Also, due to Apple restrictions it wont mount a blank disc, the drive is viewable and usable in Toast, but not by OS X itself. The drive comes with a copy of Nero, but it may be Windows only, I haven't tried installing the software.
Edit: If you want to use the LightScribe feature you'll have to download the host software and the labeling app from Lacies website.
