The problem with Dells is that they are inconsistent - you get the "panel of the month". Sometimes it's a top-notch LG-Philips S-IPS (same as Apple), sometimes a mediocre 6-bit dithered MVA from who knows where.
You have to hit screens 24" and higher to get consistently good screens (there aren't any makers of crappy 24" or 30" screens around).
Have a look at the HP Business series like the LP2465. I have a humongous LP3065, it's quite a bit better than the Dell or Apple 30" (extended gamut, 3 DVI-D ports), at least until Samsung finally releases its LED-backlit XL30. HP offers 3 year on-site service at no extra charge.
Agree with you.
I would pick a Dell for price and quality when they are on sale, hard to beat. Just be prepared to return it for a new one possibly (its easy, just time consuming) I had a 24 inch Dell, and the first one shut off. The next going strong two years
I have Samsung 24 inch as well (only a few months old) and prefer the Dell over it, even as they sit side by side. the viewing ratio on Dells IMO are better, when looking from above and bellow

Problem with most of the 8bit panels is that they are not really fast enough for games that require speed, FPS, racing sims etc. If you are not a gamer then they are great. The Samsung 226BW looks like the best gaming monitor for it's price when I recently was researching 22" widescreen LCD's.

Well, depending on the Samsung it might have been a TN panel, which would of course have worse viewing angles than the Dell 24".
However, it seems that the Dell has some pretty bad ghosting issues with it.
I like CRTs still, haven't been able to find a LCD that can match the picture quality of a good CRT. I personally use a Sony GDM-FW900, a 24in crt capable of resolutions in excess of 2300x1400. I bought mine used on Ebay for ~$300 shipped, had it for a little over a year now and works great.

I stick to monitors made by the people who make the LCD glass. Samsung is one of them. But if it is sharpness you want, you can't beat a CRT type monitor.
x2 - using a Sony Trinitron FW900 24" Widescreen BNC CRT here, just for the gaming side of it all.
I happen to know that monitor. The word hernia comes to mind when trying to lift it. Produces 16.8 million colours. Missing pixels? What's that?
3D images are several times more realistic than LCD.
