The problem with Dells is that they are inconsistent - you get the "panel of the month". Sometimes it's a top-notch LG-Philips S-IPS (same as Apple), sometimes a mediocre 6-bit dithered MVA from who knows where.
You have to hit screens 24" and higher to get consistently good screens (there aren't any makers of crappy 24" or 30" screens around).
Have a look at the HP Business series like the LP2465. I have a humongous LP3065, it's quite a bit better than the Dell or Apple 30" (extended gamut, 3 DVI-D ports), at least until Samsung finally releases its LED-backlit XL30. HP offers 3 year on-site service at no extra charge.
I know my samsung lcd tv is awesome. I would imagine there pc monitors are just as good.

My Viewsonic VX2025wm is still one of the best LCD's I've ever encountered. That goes for the NEC listed above, and the 20.1" Dell and Apple. I don't think you can find them too easily anymore though.

Samsung makes fantastic monitors but they are a bit pricey.
If you're patient, Fry's has them on sale with rebate occasionally. I have several Samsung monitors. Every rebate check came to me no problem. Last monitor was a 206bw (20" wide screen 3000:1 contrast ratio 2ms) for 180.00 after rebate.
At the time, my (now discontinued) HP f2304 was fairing very well against the Apple Cinema display. Was very pricy, but I am still quite please with it and have no remorse.

To OP: I took a chance at the Dell lottery last November, and I got an A02 S-IPS model 2007wfp. Let me tell you, I cannot be happier. Really, the bezel and manufacturer are less important than the panel type. If you get an LCD, get one with an S-IPS panel. They are hard to come by for a decent price, but they are the only way to go. If you go shopping, here is an easy way to tell if an LCD is an S-IPS (the good kind): display a black screen and look at it from the side. If you see a purple or orange tint, you have an S-IPS.
The other panel types have a way to tell them apart as well.
MVA or PVA - look from below and there will be no blackening of the picture (This happens with an S-IPS as well)
TN - look from below and there will be blackening of the picture
Bottom line: I urge you to look around and find a model with an S-IPS panel, you will be glad you did.
