Samsung makes fantastic monitors but they are a bit pricey.

the old dell 2000FP is an oldie but a goodie. its one of the best TFTs out there, not in terms of latest refresh rates and all that gaming lark.

used in just about every major motion picture when pc screens are featured, T3, enemy of the state, the core etc etc

they are 20" and if you can snag one they are gems.

i have 4 in the house and they havent failed me once --> built to last.

they have DVI and DSUB s-video in, and composite in.

Do you need a refresh rate of 2ms or would 5ms be okay?

The best 20" LCD monitor is by far the NEC 20WMGX2. If you want a CRT, get a Trinitron.

depends on what you are using it for, do you game? - if not you neednt even be concerned with refresh rates.

edit: just saw you said for general use, you dont even have to worry about refreh rate, anything below 15 wont be noticeable unless you have an infra red eye!

The "best" 20" LCDs are outfitted with 8 bit panels. They tend to cost about twice as much but are well worth it IMO. The only monitors equipped this way that I can name are the Dell 2005fpw, Dell 2007wfp, the Apple cinema display, and the NEC model mentioned earlier.

Be warned that the 2007wfp was manufactured with two very different panels and earlier models had banding issues.

I got my 2005fpw for ~$225 refurbished.

Edit: Add the Samsung 205BW to this short list. Cheaper Samsungs use 6-bit panels; the same goes for Dell and NEC.

Money no object, then something from EIZO, but I am very content with my Viewsonic.
