I'm a Sony Bigot, I've purchased/owner nothing but Sony for the last 26 years, but this year I bought a Sharp because of size limitations. I needed a 37" and Sony doesn't make one. There aren't many 37" 1080p's out there, just two that I could find. In store demos I couldn't see a difference between Sony and Sharp. HD movies using my Toshiba 1080p DVD player are just incredible. I'm very pleased with Sharp. I purchased it from Southersdeals.com, good price, fast delivery just don't let them BS you about their ridiculous insurance charge.

Well my decision to hold out didn't last long My wife opened up to the idea and without her acting as my conscience we practically ran to the store.
I ended up with the Samsung LN-T4661F 1080p 60Hz matte-screen. It was between this and the top-rated Sony 46XBR4 (which did look better and had 120Hz). Ultimately I couldn't justify the extra $1100 for the Sony for what seemed like relatively minor picture improvements and the 120Hz feature. The 4661 reviewed very well and in terms of price / performance I think it's in the sweet spot...the Sony being top of the line commands a big premium that doesn't translate into actual performance.
Also my place gets *very* bright so glare is a huge issue (see pic - more windows on the side wall too). The matte screen works out best here...any of the glossies would have been a problem. You can even see the glare on the matte screen in the pic below!
I've had a 1080i upconverting DVD player for a few years, but on this set it's amazing! I used component before, but now I'm using DVI / HDMI so that's always a plus (no A/D conversion), and on a pixel-perfect display vs. my previous rear-projection TV it's just that much crisper. I still think projection / rear-projection is more film-like by it's nature, but the picture quality on the Samsung more than makes up for it.
And of course, all the whiz-bang computer graphics on HDTV are just insanely better on a pixel-perfect display vs. RPTV
A couple weeks ago, Tweeters/Sound Advice had a weekend sale unadvertised, where they had the 60" Pioneer Elite Plasma on sale for $3999 or something ridiculous, it was like 50% off.
Meh, I'm still in the air as to what I want...while slowly, my alloted TV fund is getting depleted.

mr_baseball: I guess times have changed and Head-fiers are getting laid like champs now. (Except I seriously doubt that's the case given all the anime and computer related threads around here..)
If you're willing to make the necessary sacrifices, I think a projector is a fine choice; I'm absolutely in love with mine, and it's not even a high-end one.
My first question is why LCD? I mean its not like your forced into a LCD at that size, you should really look into a Plasma.
Plasma's have a shorter life span, and they suck much more power, that you will see a difference in your power bill, a big difference, and LED backlight LCD's look better
Is sony's XBR series LED backlit? or is it just a really really good panel?
The half life isn't really that much different. And considering the time span of either which is roughly around 9 years, by then, you'll be wanting something new anyways.
granted the technology for 1080p will likely NOT be something new as "standard", there will likely be technology that can better take advantage of it. Likely will the technology for LCDs be fairly up to par with plasma.
LCD, the fact you have to have a backlight inherently makes it inferior with darker tones. It's how the manufacturers compensate and OVERCOME that shortcoming that makes whichever your preference. I personally still dig plasma, mainly due to the trailing. granted I have seen impeccable LCDs, they were pricey as hell for the screen size I was in the market for.
My indecisiveness is likely to be my shortcommings for having to get something like a nicer DLP rather than plasma, because I keep spending my "plasma TV fund"....
